Only a few days left until the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year in Ho Chi Minh City officially takes place.
Mr. Vo Kim Bao, Head of the Literature Group - Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), said that this year is the first year that students nationwide will take the 10th grade entrance exam according to the 2018 generaleducation program. There are many differences between the old and new exam questions. The new program focuses on developing the qualities and abilities of learners. Therefore, students need to practice a lot and develop their true abilities instead of coping by memorizing. The exam will certainly not have any content that can be memorized to complete the test. "This is the basic awareness that candidates need to grasp in order to complete the exam well," Mr. Bao emphasized.
Teacher Vo Kim Bao noted: For literature, students should review by topic, not by order. When reviewing by topic, students will have a comprehensive view, connecting knowledge between lessons and knowledge learned in grades 6, 7, and 8.
Here are some suggested topics:
1. Story topics (short stories, legends, Nom poems, detective stories)
2. Poetry topics (knowledge about poetry in general, free verse, seven-seven-six-eight poetry)
3. Information text topics (pay attention to how information is presented)
4. Topic of argumentative text (pay attention to the relationship between elements in argumentative text)
In addition, students need to review the basic knowledge learned in grades 6, 7, and 8 such as rhetorical devices, ways of presenting information in informational texts, artistic forms in literary texts, etc.
When taking the test, students need to do the test in order, avoid reversing the order of the questions when doing the test because the content in the test will belong to a unified topic, the previous question will be the foundation for answering the following question. The questions and materials in the test will be used to supplement the writing part. Therefore, the previous questions have the task of suggesting and building the foundation for students to complete the following parts well.
To complete a social argumentative essay well, students need to read more newspapers, follow official news from the media to have a correct and appropriate perspective and collect a certain amount of evidence that can be used in their writing.
The answer should be specific and clear but not lengthy. Distribute time reasonably between sections. Avoid getting bogged down in writing too much content and wasting time on other questions.
To get high scores on the test, students need to note:
- Present clearly, do not be arbitrary in presenting the essay, avoid reversing the order of questions. Basic rules such as indenting the first line when starting a new paragraph, a new line, underlining to highlight the topic... are not paid attention to, causing difficulties for the grader. In addition, many students have difficult to read handwriting, many careless handwriting can also create spelling mistakes. Because of that, students lose points regrettably.
- Before starting to write, students need to read the question carefully, read the whole question once and then re-read the first sentence to do the test. Reading the whole question helps students visualize the main idea of the test and have a reasonable connection during the process of doing the test. Reading the whole question also helps students avoid subjectively reading the question incompletely and then starting to do the test, leading to off-topic and incomplete answers.
- Remember the rule: The previous question is the foundation for the next question. Students should avoid reversing the order of the questions. That will destroy the logic in thinking. In particular, the questions in the reading comprehension section are suggestions for the questions in the writing section.
- In the reading comprehension section, students need to present the question briefly and clearly, but must write the answer in sentences with complete subjects and predicates. Do not write the answer too briefly, and avoid using strange symbols to mark the answer such as * or arrows...
- In the writing section, students need to pay attention to the requirements for writing a paragraph or an essay. The structure and length of a paragraph and an essay are completely different. The test will give very specific instructions on the content to be written. Students have the habit of presenting everything they know in their essay. This is a serious mistake that leads to digression. Due to limited time, the test only requires students to analyze, comment on, and clarify certain aspects of the problem.

Some new issues to note in the 10th grade entrance exam:
- The material is certainly completely new, not included in all three textbooks. This makes learning and teaching literature more practical, and the test also reflects more accurately the ability and qualities of the learner. Students need to proactively read more texts of the same genre as they have learned to gain more practical experience.
- The test will have 2 texts (previously only 1 text). Text 1 is a literary text, text 2 is an argumentative text or an explanatory text. The test has 2 texts, so the coverage of the questions is quite high. Students can also avoid guessing questions and memorizing during the study process, thereby building a more suitable study plan.
- The literary essay section is now worth only 2 points with the requirement of writing a paragraph (previously it was 4 points, requiring a complete essay). Each person's ability to perceive literature is different, not to mention partly due to talent. Therefore, a score of 2 will be more suitable for the majority of students. In addition, students also need to equip themselves with the skills to do the test carefully, the question does not require analysis of the entire work but only requires discussion of a certain aspect.
- The most important part is writing a social argumentative essay. Previously, there were two types of essays: an argumentative essay about an idea or moral, and an argumentative essay about an event or phenomenon in life. These types of essays are more or less related to the two types of essays that will appear in the exam: an argumentative essay about a life issue or an argumentative essay about a problem that needs to be solved. You can refer to the ideas of essays written in the two old types, but you need to be selective because the skills, techniques, and requirements of the essay have changed a lot.
