Half of the "dream"
The road leading to Phan Thiet Airport, inaugurated on April 30th, is one of the projects celebrating the Liberation Day of Southern Vietnam. On December 19th, it proved its worth by welcoming many central and provincial leaders from Lam Dong province to the inauguration ceremony of the military section of Phan Thiet Airport. General Phan Van Giang, a member of the Politburo, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and Minister of National Defense, attended and cut the ribbon to inaugurate the project, a celebration of the National Party Congress, with hundreds of people eagerly awaiting its completion. This is the first piece of good news regarding Phan Thiet Airport, but it only fulfills half of the "dream," as the civilian section has yet to begin construction.
Phan Thiet Airport is designed as a dual-use airport, comprising both military and civilian sections. The recently inaugurated military section, with a total investment of over 7,900 billion VND, is built on an area of approximately 439 hectares. Currently, core components including the runway, lighting system, and navigation station have been completed and are ready for official operation. According to the plan, the facility meets military standard level I and civilian standard level 4E. Its ability to accommodate modern wide-body aircraft enhances the training, mobility, and combat readiness of the Vietnamese Air Force. In addition to its defense objectives, the project also integrates a civilian aviation component.
Standing and watching the inauguration ceremony of the military section of Phan Thiet airport, Mr. Le Van Thiet from Mui Ne ward said: “For many years, people have been waiting for the airport to become operational. Although only the military section has been completed, people are very excited as the airport project is gradually being completed. I really hope the civilian section will start construction soon…” Standing next to Mr. Thiet was Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Nga from Hanoi, who was visiting Mui Ne. Ms. Nga said: “My group of nearly 20 people came to Mui Ne for Christmas. Hearing about the airport inauguration, we stopped by to take some souvenir photos. Everyone in the group hopes that Phan Thiet airport will be completed soon so that we can fly directly from Hanoi to Mui Ne quickly and conveniently.”
Make it a reality soon.
According to the latest approval in mid-December 2025 (Decision No. 2619/QD-UBND, dated December 19, 2025), the Provincial People's Committee has approved the investment plan for the "Phan Thiet Airport - Civil Aviation Project" with an estimated budget of nearly 3,800 billion VND on an area of 74.6 hectares, through a bidding process. The construction works include: aircraft runways (aircraft parking areas, taxiways); air and ground traffic control and navigation facilities; traffic control and operations building; construction of a taxiway lighting system and signage suitable for the scale of the taxiway system; aircraft parking area lighting system; and installation of an AWOS system (weather observation system). According to the design, by 2030, the civil aviation terminal at Phan Thiet Airport will have a capacity of approximately 2 million passengers per year. This infrastructure focuses on serving both domestic and irregular international flights, contributing to solving the infrastructure synchronization problem for Lam Dong - the largest province in the country after the administrative boundary merger.
Phan Thiet Airport, situated between the Mui Ne National Tourist Area and at the gateway to tourism in South Central Vietnam, is expected to create a new economic space, boost service and logistics industries, and attract investment capital to the region. From another perspective, the opening of the civilian section of Phan Thiet Airport, along with the new road network, will create more opportunities for domestic businesses to combine tourism with investment opportunities in various sectors in Lam Dong province. The long-awaited arrival of passenger flights from all over the world to Lam Dong, with its blue sea, is becoming a reality day by day...
According to the Department of Construction, the unit is currently urgently completing the legal procedures to organize the bidding for the construction of the "Phan Thiet Airport - Civil Aviation Section" project from the fourth quarter of 2025, as directed by the Provincial People's Committee.
