On the afternoon of December 3rd, the People's Committee of Can Tho City organized a meeting between the city's government and businesses in Can Tho in 2025.
Speaking to the city authorities, Mr. Tram Du - General Director of TD Soc Trang Organic Rice Agriculture Joint Stock Company - said that in 2024, Tuoi Tre newspaper, in coordination with the former Soc Trang province, organized a very successful workshop on building a national rice brand for Vietnamese rice.
Looking ahead to 2026, the city is urged to accelerate the development of a national rice brand, as ST25 rice has once again won the " world's best rice" award.
"Thailand has Hom Mali rice, India has Basmati rice, and Vietnam has ST25 rice, which has won the 'world's best' award three times. Currently, this rice belongs to Can Tho city, so I boldly propose hosting the event again to build a brand, so that Can Tho can have a world-class brand," Mr. Du presented.
In addition, Mr. Du also requested information on whether the program to cultivate 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice will continue to support cooperatives and farmers in terms of fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds in 2026, as it did in 2024 and 2025.
Responding to this proposal, the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, Ngo Thai Chan, affirmed that the agricultural sector is aware of its responsibility in promoting local products as well as in enhancing the national rice brand. Therefore, it has advised the Standing Committee of the Can Tho City Party Committee to submit a document to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requesting permission for the city to host the Can Tho International Rice Festival in 2026 (expected to be held in October 2026 if approved).
"This is a local proposal, and whether the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment agrees or not is up to the ministry," Mr. Chan noted.
Regarding the project to cultivate 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice, Mr. Chan affirmed that the city will continue to implement it until 2030. Currently, the city has participated in this program with a total area of 104,000 hectares and is expected to reach 140,000 hectares by 2030.
"This year, the city is implementing 12 model projects in cooperatives and will continue to provide support in terms of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides as in last year," Mr. Chan added.
