Crater of Diamonds State Park is a volcanic crater created by unique geological conditions that produce a variety of gemstones. For $10, visitors can spend the day digging for buried treasure and potentially bring home a gem.
Located in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, Crater Of Diamonds State Park offers a unique opportunity for everyone as it is the only diamond mine in the world that is accessible to the public.
In 1906, Mr. John Wesley Huddleston, living in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, USA, unexpectedly dug up 2 "strange" and very hard stones in his family's field. Thinking that these could be precious stones, Mr. John brought them to an expert for appraisal. Thanks to that, he knew that they were 2 diamonds.
However, John was not interested in mining diamonds, so he sold the land to the investment group for $36,000.
The mining operation did not go well, so the land was renamed "Crater of Diamonds" and opened to the public for diamond prospecting. The state of Arkansas purchased the land in 1972 and turned it into a park.
According to many old American documents, at that time, this land had some more private tourist attractions opened but the diamond picking location was under government management.
The state government has leveled an area of more than 15 hectares for the public to collect diamonds. It can be said that Crater of Diamonds is the only place in the world that is open to visitors.
When coming to explore and want to pick up diamonds here, visitors will be given detailed instructions on how to find diamonds.
People are allowed to bring their own diamond-digging tools to the park, except for battery-powered or motor-powered tools. If they find a diamond, they can keep it.
To be able to pick up diamonds at the "Crater of Diamonds", everyone must buy a ticket.
According to statistics, since 1906, more than 75,000 diamonds of various sizes have been found in the "Crater of Diamonds".
Experts believe that the diamonds in the "Crater of Diamonds" were formed about 3 billion years ago. Initially, they were deep under the Earth's surface. However, about 100 million years ago, volcanic eruptions caused a large amount of diamonds to rise to the surface, making them easier to find.
