Translator of the book 'Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi' passed away

On November 1, information from the family said that teacher, researcher Phan Dang, translator of the book Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi, passed away at 11:45 p.m. on October 31 at his home in Hue City (Thua Thien - Hue ).

Teacher and researcher Phan Dang (born in 1949, from Dong Ha City, Quang Tri), former Head of the Department of Literature, Hue University (now University of Science , Hue University) is an exemplary and knowledgeable teacher of many generations of literature students at the University of Science , University of Hue University.

He also teaches at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hue.

Besides teaching, teacher Phan Dang is also a researcher and Han-Nom expert with many dissertations, articles, reports... presenting at scientific seminars on culture, history, ancient and medieval Vietnamese literature and Buddhist culture in the ancient capital of Hue.

In 2021, the book Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi by author Le Quang Dinh (1759 - 1813) translated and annotated by researcher Phan Dang, published by The Gioi Publishing House and Thai Ha Book Joint Stock Company won the only A prize of the 5th National Book Award in 2022. This is the most important award in the publishing industry, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution in coordination with the Vietnam Publishing Association.

Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi is considered the first geography book of the Nguyen Dynasty, written right after King Gia Long was crowned. The book is both an official document to affirm the country's territory and clearly shows the independence and culture of a self-reliant nation in the early 19th century.

The book is arranged into 3 main parts. Part 1, in addition to the table of contents, also has 2 appendices: The route from the capital to the citadels, and the travel time between the citadels. Part 2 is the dich lo section, recording the post roads, that is, the main roads from the capital Hue to the citadels, including both land and water routes. Part 3 is the Thuc Luc section, recording the land and water routes in the citadels.

The book Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi by author Le Quang Dinh (1759 - 1813) was translated and annotated by researcher Phan Dang.

The outstanding value of Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi is the precise description of routes, post stations, place names, mountains, rivers, streams, canals, and estuaries, along with very specific explanations of the strengths and weaknesses, dangerous and advantageous points of each locality. The book series has been translated, annotated, and published, helping readers access more valuable sources of information about the Nguyen Dynasty.

Author Le Quang Dinh was from Tien Non village, now Phu Mau commune, Phu Vang district (Thua Thien - Hue). In 1788, he passed the exam and was appointed to work in the Royal Academy and promoted to Minister of Finance, concurrently in charge of the Imperial Astronomical Observatory until his death. He was assigned by King Gia Long to compile the book Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Du Dia Chi , completed in 1806.
