On the morning of October 28th, information from the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC) indicated that the number of measles patients is on the rise.

According to representatives from the Hanoi City Center for Disease Control (CDC), in the past week (October 18-25), the city recorded 7 new cases of measles. Of the new cases, 6 were unvaccinated and 1 had an unknown vaccination history. The cumulative number of measles cases recorded since the beginning of the year is 35.

The Hanoi CDC assesses that the number of measles cases is on the rise. Cases are scattered throughout the area, mainly among young children who are not yet old enough to be vaccinated or have not received a full course of vaccinations. It is predicted that more cases may be recorded in the coming period, especially in the last three months of the year.

Currently, district and town health centers are continuing to review eligible children and invite them for vaccination as part of the measles-rubella immunization campaign for children aged 1-5 years to prevent and control measles outbreaks, as directed by the Hanoi People's Committee.

Strengthen surveillance activities for suspected measles outbreaks, conduct epidemiological investigations, collect samples for testing from 100% of suspected cases, and organize containment and thorough treatment of areas with patients and outbreaks according to regulations.

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine, measles is a Group B infectious disease caused by the measles virus. It commonly affects children under 5 years old, but can also occur in adults who have not been vaccinated against measles or have not received the full course of vaccination.

There is no specific treatment for measles, and it is easily spread through the respiratory tract via droplets from infected individuals, or through direct contact, such as through hands contaminated with the secretions of infected people.

Places where large crowds gather, such as public areas and schools, have a very high risk of measles outbreaks. Measles outbreaks typically occur in cycles of 3-5 years.

Vaccination is an effective measure to prevent disease. Disease transmission can only be stopped when the immunity rate in the community reaches over 95%.

To prevent measles outbreaks, Hanoi is implementing a mass measles vaccination program for children. This not only helps children develop immunity against the disease but also prevents its spread, demonstrating a shared responsibility in creating community immunity.

In addition to the ongoing measles vaccination campaign, the health sector advises people to pay attention to the measles vaccination schedule for children as recommended in the Expanded Immunization Program for Children, with the following schedule:
Dose 1: Administered when the child is 9 months old (measles vaccine).

Second dose: Administered when the child is 18 months old (measles-rubella vaccine).

If your child is unvaccinated or has missed their scheduled vaccination appointment, you should immediately go to a healthcare facility for consultation and to ensure your child receives all necessary vaccinations.

To prevent measles, the Ministry of Health recommends that people proactively take children aged 9 months to 2 years who have not been vaccinated or have not received both doses of the measles vaccine to get vaccinated fully and on schedule.

Keep children away from and away from children suspected of having measles. Wash your hands frequently with soap when caring for children.

Maintain daily hygiene for your child's body, nose, throat, eyes, and teeth. Ensure your home and bathroom are well-ventilated and clean. Provide your child with adequate nutrition.

Nurseries, kindergartens, and schools where large numbers of children gather need to maintain cleanliness and good ventilation; toys, learning materials, and classrooms should be regularly disinfected with common disinfectants.

Upon detecting symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and rash, children should be isolated immediately and taken to the nearest medical facility for examination and timely treatment. Avoid taking children to higher-level facilities for treatment unnecessarily to prevent overloading hospitals and cross-infection within the hospital.
