According to GSMArena , earlier this week, Apple unveiled a new version of the Mac Studio, equipped with the M4 Max chip and, notably, the all-new M3 Ultra. Shortly after, Geekbench 6 benchmark scores for the Mac Studio version using the M3 Ultra chip appeared, revealing some of the power of Apple's most powerful chip in the M series.
The Mac Studio M3 Ultra (model number Mac15,14) in the Geekbench 6 test boasts a 32-core CPU and up to 256 GB of Unified Memory. The specific results show a single-core performance score of 3,221 and a multi-core score of 27,749.
Notably, the M3 Ultra's single-core score is 20% lower than the 16-inch MacBook Pro running the M4 Max chip (16-core CPU). However, in multi-core tests, the M3 Ultra still shows an 8% advantage.
Is the M3 Ultra chip considered a step backward for Apple?

Compared to the Mac Studio equipped with the M2 Ultra chip, the M3 Ultra shows a significant improvement with a 13% increase in single-core performance and up to 25% increase in multi-core performance. However, this increase is still lower than the 50% increase that Apple advertised in its marketing materials.
It's important to emphasize that these are just initial benchmarks, focusing on CPU performance. For a more comprehensive picture, we still need to wait for more in-depth tests, especially GPU performance tests, where the M3 Ultra is expected to demonstrate superior power.
Another factor to consider is that the M3 Ultra uses TSMC's first-generation 3nm process, while the M4 series is manufactured on a second-generation 3nm process, resulting in better energy efficiency.
The initial benchmark results for the M3 Ultra have provided interesting information, but also raised quite a few questions. Is this a step backward for Apple? Or will the true power of the M3 Ultra be revealed in other tests? Let's wait for more detailed reviews in the coming time.
