According to GSMArena , earlier this week, Apple introduced the new version of the Mac Studio, equipped with the M4 Max chip and especially the all-new M3 Ultra. Immediately after that, the Geekbench 6 benchmark score of the Mac Studio version using the M3 Ultra chip appeared, revealing some of the power of the most 'powerful' chip in Apple's M series.
The Mac Studio M3 Ultra (model number Mac15,14) in the Geekbench 6 test has a 32-core CPU and up to 256 GB of Unified Memory. The specific results show a single-core performance score of 3,221 and a multi-core score of 27,749.
It is worth noting that the M3 Ultra's single-core score is 20% lower than the 16-inch MacBook Pro running the M4 Max chip (16-core CPU). However, in the multi-core test, the M3 Ultra still shows an 8% advantage.
Is the M3 Ultra chip considered a step backward for Apple?

Compared to the Mac Studio with the M2 Ultra chip, the M3 Ultra shows a clear improvement with a 13% increase in single-core performance and a 25% increase in multi-core. However, this increase is still lower than the 50% figure that Apple advertised in its marketing materials.
It should be emphasized that these are just initial benchmarks, focusing on CPU performance. For a more comprehensive view, we still need to wait for more in-depth tests, especially GPU performance tests, where the M3 Ultra is expected to show its superior power.
Another factor to consider is that the M3 Ultra uses TSMC's first-generation 3nm process, while the M4 series is manufactured on the second-generation 3nm process, which offers better power efficiency.
The first benchmark results of the M3 Ultra have brought a lot of interesting information, but also raised many questions. Is this a 'step back' for Apple? Or will the real power of the M3 Ultra be shown in other tests? Let's wait for more detailed reviews in the near future.
