Many schools have floor scores close to the bottom.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture has set the minimum admission score from the high school graduation exam score for all majors at 15. This level is 11 to nearly 13 points lower than the standard score for many majors in 2024. Last year, the standard scores for majors such as Tourism , Tourism - Travel Management, Cultural Management, and Cultural Communication were all very high, from 26.5 to 27.85 points.

At Ho Chi Minh City Open University, the minimum score from this year's high school graduation exam is 15-16 points depending on the major, a difference of 6-9 points compared to the 2024 standard score of many majors (for example, Marketing: 24.5; International Business: 23.75; Psychology: 23.8).

Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry has set the minimum admission score this year at 16 for all majors based on the high school graduation exam scores. This is 6 to 9 points lower than last year's standard score, with the highest score for Veterinary Medicine at 25 points, and many other majors at 22-23 points.

Hanoi National University of Education set the floor score from 18 to 21, a difference of 5 to more than 7 points compared to last year's standard score.

The minimum score for all majors of Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities this year is 19, 9-10 points lower than the standard score for many majors in 2024.

The floor score of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City this year is 18 and 20. Compared to the standard score in 2024, the floor score has the biggest difference of 8.8 points. Many other majors have a difference of 4-5 points.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, the difference between this year's floor score and last year's benchmark score is 7.2 points.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Science has set a floor score of 16-24, some majors have decreased by 4-6 points compared to last year. In particular, a series of hot majors such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence have a floor score of 20, a decrease of 4 points compared to last year. The biggest decrease is Data Science, from 24 to 18 points. Meanwhile, in 2024, the standard score for Computer Science is 28.5; Artificial Intelligence is 27.7; Data Science is 26.85, a difference of about 8 points.

Many other universities also set quite low floor scores, with a huge difference compared to the 2024 benchmark scores.

Schools that set a floor score close to the benchmark

Up to this point, there are 2 universities with the highest floor scores in the country and close to the standard scores: Saigon University and Diplomatic Academy.

This year, the floor score of Saigon University ranges from 17 to 25 points. Of which, Mathematics Pedagogy takes 24.5 points; History Pedagogy and Geography Pedagogy are both at 25 points. Compared to the benchmark score in 2024 (Math Pedagogy: 27.75 - A00; 26.75 - A01; History Pedagogy: 28.25; Geography Pedagogy: 27.91), this year's floor score is quite close.

The Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and English Pedagogy majors all have a floor score of 24 - also approaching last year's benchmark score (26.43; 26.98; 28.11 and 27, respectively). This year's benchmark score is expected to decrease slightly by 1-2 points.

Meanwhile, the Diplomatic Academy set the minimum score for block C00 at 25 and for the remaining blocks at 22. Last year, the benchmark score for block C00 at the Academy in the majors was quite close to the above 25 score, such as: International Studies 28.3; International Law 28.02; International Communications 28.46; International Trade Law 28.2; Chinese Studies 28.42...

Some other schools also announced the floor score quite close to last year. Ho Chi Minh City University of Education set the floor score at 24 for the majors of Mathematics, Chemistry, Literature, History, Geography and English, while the standard score in 2024 ranges from 27.6 to 28.6.

This year, Nha Trang University did not provide a minimum admission score but instead provided a predicted standard score for candidates to refer to and submit their applications.

The school representative said that the school does not announce the floor score but mainly provides information on the standard scores of previous years and predicts that this year it will decrease by 1-3 points depending on the major. According to the school, the floor score is not very meaningful and sometimes causes difficulties for candidates and the school.

High benchmark but low floor score announcement is irresponsible

Speaking with VietNamNet, Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Dung, former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that for many years he has said many times and very frankly that schools with high admission scores but setting low floor scores are irresponsible to candidates. This can cause candidates to miss out on the opportunity to enter university and incur additional costs.

“Everyone says that the minimum score is the ‘threshold’ for submitting an application, but many candidates do not fully understand and think that the minimum score is enough to pass the exam. When that happens, candidates who register lose a wish and waste money,” said Mr. Dung.

Mr. Dung said that universities can completely set the floor score approximately equal to the expected standard score, based on annual enrollment data and score distribution. This is the responsibility of universities to do for the benefit of candidates. They should not be afraid of losing their "rice pot" and think that setting the floor score too high will prevent candidates from entering. "Quality goods must have a high price. Schools that set a low floor score are lowering their own value," said Mr. Dung.

According to Mr. Dung, when the floor score is too low compared to the standard score, the announcement of the floor score will lose its meaning. Therefore, the idea of eliminating the floor score (except for high-quality majors such as Medicine, Education, Semiconductors, etc.) and relying on the score spectrum to be able to predict the standard score close to previous years so that candidates can proactively submit their applications is a new and progressive idea.

The principal of a southern university frankly said: To answer the question of why the standard score is high but the minimum score is low, we must first ask the question: "How much does a candidate have to pay for each registration wish?" When the minimum score is low, the number of registration wishes is greater, candidates have to pay more, while the school benefits.

The second reason is that many schools are not confident in the stability of the benchmark scores, so they do not dare to set a floor score close to the actual benchmark scores. Especially, in the context that this year there is no early admission and almost no use of transcripts, many schools are willing to lower the floor score very low to expand enrollment opportunities.

“In fact, schools can completely determine a reasonable floor score. For majors with stable benchmark scores over the years, the floor score can be set a few points lower (up to 5 points maximum) to screen suitable candidates, creating conditions for them to choose other schools. For majors with fluctuating benchmark scores, the floor score can be set lower to ensure safety in enrollment,” the principal shared.
