In her brightly lit traditional wooden house, Ms. Lo Thi Nit was watching television, excitedly sharing: "At the beginning of 2024, the village received investment from the government to build a transformer station, extend electricity lines to every house, install electrical panels, circuit breakers, sockets, and switches, and provide guidance on safe electricity usage. The villagers are very happy. As soon as we had electricity, my family bought a refrigerator to store food; we bought a TV a few years ago, but the electricity was weak so we couldn't watch it often, but now we can watch it comfortably. Since the grid electricity arrived, neighbors have been coming over to watch the news and economic models on TV, it's so much fun!"
The village of Pa Thơm has 27 households and 131 inhabitants of the Lao ethnic minority. The village is located more than 14km from the commune center, and access is difficult. Before the national power grid project was implemented, many households had independently purchased hydroelectric generators, but during the dry season, the streams dried up, and the electricity was weak and intermittent. At night, they could only light small lamps for meals and for the children to study. Many generators were also swept away during the rainy season…
Driven by the practical needs of the local people, at the end of 2023, Dien Bien district invested 19 billion VND from the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas to build electricity infrastructure for the villages of Pa Thom, Huoi Moi, and the Buom En group of villages in Pa Thom commune. Since having electricity, the people in these villages have had the opportunity to improve their living standards.

According to Mr. Tong Van Linh, Head of Pa Thom village: Without electricity, production faced many difficulties, the cultural and spiritual life of the villagers was limited, and it affected the children's education. With electricity, the villagers can "connect with the world ," and life has changed significantly. People have invested in refrigerators, televisions, rice milling machines, etc., to serve their daily lives, production, and improve their quality of life. Children have more time to study in the evenings. Previously, when I wanted to disseminate the Party's guidelines and policies, or the State's laws, I had to go to each household or remind people 2-3 days in advance to organize village meetings; now, with electricity and phone signal, I've created a Zalo group for the village. When there's something important, I can send messages to the group for easier communication and to remind them about meetings.
“Now that we have access to the national power grid, we can access television and radio programs, and our people can also get more important and useful information, especially on applying scientific and technological advancements to production… I also invested 70 million VND to buy a rice milling machine to serve my family and the people in the village,” shared Mr. Lo Van Thanh from Pa Thom village.

Mr. Ca Van Tranh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Pa Thom commune, said: "The long-awaited dream of the people of Pa Thom village has finally come true. Having access to the national power grid creates favorable conditions for people to focus on their cultural and spiritual lives; to introduce machinery and mechanization into production, develop the economy, and contribute to fulfilling the criteria for building new rural areas in the locality."
Having access to the national power grid not only brings joy but also presents a great opportunity to help the people of Pa Thơm village gradually develop their economy and alleviate poverty.
