Farmers proactively engage in concentrated production.
In the communes and wards of the southeastern region of the province, after overcoming the peak of the hot and dry season in some areas, the first rains of the season have helped to reduce the temperature. Along with the regulation of irrigation water resources, these "golden" rains have helped to reduce water pressure for agricultural production, including the 2026 summer-autumn rice crop. This has created favorable conditions for farmers to engage in agricultural production.
Ms. To Thi Nhung, from Tu Son village, Song Luy commune, is one of many rice farmers in the commune who completed planting their summer-autumn rice crop more than a week ago. Ms. Nhung shared that after harvesting the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop with a yield of over 6 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), thanks to sufficient irrigation water and early seasonal rains, she was able to prepare the land and successfully plant 7 sao of summer-autumn rice.
Mr. Vo Thanh Giac, Director of Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited - Bac Binh Branch, said: For the 2026 summer-autumn crop, the branch has developed a plan to supply water for agricultural production to communes in the area covering over 11,300 hectares. The concentrated planting period is from April 22nd to the end of May 2026. Localities with large-scale production using irrigation water include Bac Binh, Hai Ninh, Hong Thai, and Song Luy communes… However, due to prolonged hot weather, the water supply for the summer-autumn crop has been delayed, extending the planting schedule to June 30th, 2026. The People's Committees of the localities in the water supply area are proactively reviewing the planted area. They are also specifically identifying areas with stable rice production and areas at risk of drought. In addition, farmers in these localities are continuing to prepare the land and complete the planting in a concentrated manner.
Balanced water resource management
At a recent meeting concerning water supply for the summer-autumn crop season in the southeastern part of the province, the leaders of Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited stated: After careful consideration, the company prioritizes water supply for domestic use until July 31st. Following that, water will be used for the remaining winter-spring crop, dragon fruit, and fruit trees until the end of June 2026 (excluding some areas where water supply was previously suspended). The remaining water will be allocated for summer-autumn production and irrigation until July 15th. The safest option chosen by the water supply unit is to allocate water for over 29,500 hectares of rice, vegetables, dragon fruit, and fruit trees. For the 2,000 hectares of land where water is sourced from natural rivers and streams and water sources are not readily available, production will be planned based on the availability of water from these rivers and streams. Currently, the provincial agricultural sector is working closely with local authorities to implement this plan. This helps avoid planting in areas with unreliable water sources and ensures a stable water supply throughout the entire growing season.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment also recommends that in rice fields where irrigation water is not guaranteed, farmers should be encouraged to switch to short-term, drought-resistant crops such as vegetables, flowers, or root crops. At the same time, concentrated sowing should be implemented to shorten the planting time. Furthermore, to adapt to the hot weather conditions, farmers in the southeastern region of Lam Dong are actively applying water-saving farming techniques. For dragon fruit orchards, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems continue to be effective in maximizing moisture retention during the dry season…
Given the unpredictable weather patterns, the summer-autumn crop production in the province in general, and in the southeastern part of Lam Dong province in particular, still faces many challenges. However, with close guidance and flexible plans from the agricultural sector, along with the people's awareness of water conservation, these difficulties will soon be overcome. This will lead to a stable, safe, and efficient summer-autumn crop.
According to the Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, as of May 26th, the current usable water volume in irrigation reservoirs in the southeastern part of the province is 154.12/367.51 million m³ , reaching 41.9% of the design capacity, which is 6.61 million m³ lower than the same period last year. The usable water volume in hydropower reservoirs is as follows: Dai Ninh has 84.98/251.73 million m³ , reaching 33.8% of the design capacity; Ham Thuan has 140.99/522.5 million m³ , reaching 27% of the design capacity; and Da Mi has 9.61/11.6 million m³ , reaching 82.8% of the design capacity.
