At Dong Yen parish church, Yen Dai parish, Nghi Phu ward, Vinh city ( Nghe An province), parishioners made a Christmas tree out of bamboo and reeds. In the photo, the tree is erected in front of Dong Yen parish church.

To make this Christmas tree, the parishioners of Dong Yen had to go to the mountains to buy bamboo and reeds. Then, the reeds were washed clean and assembled, tied together with flexible steel wires to form the pre-designed Christmas tree.
The bamboo is cut into 10cm sections, and holes are drilled through the nodes. Then, the parishioners tie them together into large bundles. In the photo, parishioners from Dong Yen are seen drilling and preparing the bamboo sections.

Large sections of bamboo, after being strung together, are tied to a pine tree frame.
This Christmas tree is a key highlight in this year's Christmas celebrations by the parishioners of Dong Yen, made from 1,400 bamboo and reeds. The photo shows the completed bamboo and reed Christmas tree, ready for use after nearly a month of construction.

Bamboo is left in its original round shape and evenly wrapped around the steel support of the pine tree. In the photo, the top of the pine tree tower is quite elaborately and meticulously crafted.

The Christmas tree is designed with three tiers, standing 22 meters tall; the base has a diameter of 8 meters. People can walk around the top of the tree to observe the area below and around it.

Father Joseph Nguyen Dinh Khan, the parish priest, said that the idea of making a Christmas tree out of bamboo has the meaning of faith integrating culture. In Vietnamese history and culture, bamboo is a symbol of the resilience and indomitable will of the Vietnamese people. The image symbolizes connection and peace.
"The birth of Jesus is Emmanuel, who is with us, understanding all the desires of the Vietnamese people, and will always be with us, supporting and blessing those who receive Him. The Christmas tree with its path leading up symbolizes the journey towards heaven to enjoy eternal happiness," shared Father Joseph Nguyen Dinh Khan, the parish priest.

The path leading up and down the pine tree is 2 meters wide and paved with very sturdy bamboo planks.

The process of installing the lights for the Christmas tree requires careful attention to detail; any oversight could lead to potential risks.
According to Mr. Ho Ngoc Van, Head of the Parish Council of Dong Yen, creating this unique Christmas tree required 30-40 people working daily for nearly a month.
"The cost of buying decorations for the Christmas tree was about 60 million VND, not including the labor costs of everyone involved. After it was finished, the tree attracted many local people to come and see it, and the parishioners were also very happy," Mr. Van shared.

The grounds of Dong Yen parish church have been decorated with a giant Christmas tree made from bamboo and reeds to serve the local people during Christmas 2024.
For Catholics, the image of a Christmas tree is indispensable during every holiday. The sturdiness and brilliance of the Christmas tree are likened to the solidity of a church bell tower.
