We have long known the immense influence of Ho Chi Minh's poetry, especially his "Prison Diary," which has been translated and introduced abroad.

However, such understandings often remain subjective. According to translator Thúy Toàn, “After Nguyễn Du’s ‘Truyện Kiều,’ Hồ Chí Minh’s ‘Prison Diary’ can also be considered another record for a literary work that has been translated into many languages ​​around the world .” Recently, Võ Xuân Quế’s book “Prison Diary in Foreign Languages” has provided a comprehensive and detailed overview of this phenomenon.

Following the introduction, as a way of presenting the history of the issue, Vo Xuan Que systematically compiles foreign language translations of "Prison Diary" through assessments by individual authors, research institutions, and conferences. Understandably, these translations differ and are incomplete or inaccurate. With the desire to supplement this, after five years of work, he compiled a list of at least 37 languages/scripts. Arranged alphabetically, these are Arabic, Albanian, English, Polish, Persian, Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Portuguese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, German, Esperanto, Galician, Korean, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Greek, Italian, Kazakh, Lao, Malayalam, Myanmar, Mongolian, Norwegian, Russian, Japanese, French, Finnish, Romanian, Slovak, Sinhala, Spanish, Swedish, and Uzbek. This is truly a remarkable achievement, as many people may not even be familiar with some of these languages. English has the most translations, eight in total, followed by Bengali, Japanese, Spanish, and so on. Vo Xuan Que meticulously includes the title of each language book, the translator, the place, and the year of publication. And alongside that, there are many "unknown" details: translations unknown in Vietnam, and collected translations that haven't been introduced yet...

It's interesting to see the "narrative" of the English poet John Birtwhistle: "So you can see that 'Prison Diary,' written in the language and by a politician , has interested me for decades in my own poetry. It could be said that my rewriting Palmer's 'Prison Diary' contributed to the development of my own poetry."

At just under 200 pages, "Prison Diaries in Foreign Languages" is not easy for the average reader. The author modestly states his work as "collection and introduction," but this is indeed a substantial and meticulous research project, requiring considerable time, effort, and intellectual input.

Dr. Vo Xuan Que, formerly a researcher at the Vietnam Institute of Linguistics, currently lives in Finland. His extensive connections with the international academic community, his foreign language skills, and his work environment allow him easier access to many original sources of information, while also requiring a highly structured methodology. He respects source materials and "quantifies" scattered information, which is essential for objectivity. With his rigorous scientific approach, the book instills confidence and strengthens the pride of those who love "Diary in Prison."
