Seo Len villagers harvest the winter rice crop.
Talking to us in a wooden house designed in the tradition of the Dao people, Mr. Ly A Lam - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Seo Len village shared: In the past, people's lives were very difficult. Households' income mainly depended on rice and corn cultivation, but the cultivated land was small, production was mainly based on habit. In addition, due to the impact of floods, golden apple snails and field mice biting and destroying, poverty was always persistent.
The village has 52 households with 296 Dao people. In recent years, with the attention and support of the State, specialized units, and commune organizations to propagate and mobilize the conversion of crop structure, change of thinking and working methods, people have boldly followed. In addition, the Farmers' Association and the Commune Women's Union have coordinated to organize for members to participate in short-term training courses on agricultural extension and vocational training. Households proactively visit the fields to detect early signs of pests and diseases for timely prevention. Thanks to that, the appearance of the village has gradually improved, and the quality of life has gradually improved.
Up to now, the village has 15 hectares of taro, more than 10 hectares of cassava and many areas of cinnamon, macadamia, black turmeric, and cassava for stable productivity and income. Households focus on raising livestock, investing in barns, and protecting the environment. From difficult economic circumstances, many families have high incomes such as: Chao Chin Pao, Tan A Sang, and Chang Van Toan, earning more than 100 million VND/year. The village has reduced from 21 poor households (in 2022) to 8 households (in 2025).
In the past 2 years, each household has voluntarily contributed 230 thousand VND to build 320m of road to the production area; contributed a total of 15 million VND to buy and install bulbs and electric wires to light up the village roads. In particular, the village is a bright spot of the commune in terms of solidarity. People are close-knit and support each other in production as well as in life. Whenever a family has a happy or sad event, the whole village joins hands to help and share. These practical actions not only contribute to improving production conditions and building a solid security posture, but also demonstrate the sense of responsibility of the people for the community.
Material life has improved, people have actively participated in movements launched by the locality such as: "All people unite to build a cultural life", "Building new rural areas", protecting forests. In the past 3 years, the village has not had any cases of early marriage, and weddings are not held for long periods like before.
Visiting the family of Mr. Tan A Sang (a high-income household in the village), through observation, we saw many bags of rice stacked on top of each other in the corner of the house. Mr. Sang shared: I have converted to growing cassava and taro at the foot of the ineffective rice field, helping to stabilize my income. Recently, I bought a truck to transport agricultural products to the border gate for consumption. I will learn more knowledge to produce and do business better.
Saying goodbye to the people of Seo Len village in the pale yellow afternoon sun, farmers were busy carrying loads of corn, rice, and taro to the purchasing location. Although life in the borderland is still difficult, with the spirit of solidarity and determination to rise up, the life of the villagers will become increasingly prosperous and happy.
