Unexpectedly, the treasure forgotten for many years is worth billions of dong.
A British woman, while moving house, accidentally found a porcelain bowl on a shelf. In her memory, this bowl had been there for many years and the woman's family had forgotten about it.
The small white and light blue porcelain bowl is intricately carved with lotus, peony, and mallow flowers, along with pomegranates, persimmons, and peaches.
The woman brought the porcelain bowl to an auction house in Bath, Somerset, England for appraisal. After careful examination, experts said the porcelain bowl was an extremely rare treasure, dating back to the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of China (1678-1735). The bowl was nearly 300 years old.
Initially, experts estimated the price of this porcelain bowl at 20,000-30,000 pounds (about 600-900 million VND). But in the end, the bowl was sold for 220,000 pounds (equivalent to more than 6.6 billion VND) to a Chinese customer.
Antiques expert at Aldridges of Bath auction house - Ivan Street said the woman had no idea of the true value of the porcelain bowl.
He shared that he had previously auctioned a similar porcelain bowl for 110,000 pounds (more than 3.3 billion VND). Therefore, he was very surprised when this porcelain bowl was offered at double the price.
Explaining the rarity of the bowl, Mr. Street said that Emperor Yongzheng reigned for a short time (only 13 years), so quality objects at that time were very rare.
