Witness the biggest and brightest golden supermoon of the year in November.

The light from a supermoon can even create faint shadows on the ground – a rare effect that only appears with the strongest supermoons.

On November 5th, the Moon will have its brightest and largest display of the year. This is the second in a series of three consecutive supermoons that will conclude 2025.

A supermoon is a phenomenon that occurs when a full moon is near or exactly at its closest point to Earth in its orbit (called perigee), making the moon appear larger and brighter than usual when observed from Earth.

The November supermoon is traditionally called the "Beaver Moon" by many Native American communities in North America because it marks the season when beavers build their winter nests.

It's difficult to see with the naked eye how much larger the supermoon is than usual, but its increased brightness is very noticeable, enough to create shadows and illuminate the night from dusk until dawn.

Why is the Beaver Supermoon so remarkable?

The November supermoon is not only closer to Earth but also orbits more than 27,000 km closer than average. This makes the Moon appear about 7% larger and up to 16% brighter than a normal full moon.

The brightness of this supermoon was enough to overshadow the stars, even casting shadows on the ground. This is a rare effect only seen in the strongest supermoons.

The Moon will not appear this large and bright again until November 24, 2026, when the next "Beaver Moon" reaches a nearly similar orbit.

Tips for observing and photographing the supermoon.

Observing the supermoon doesn't require special equipment, but the following tips can help you make the most of the experience.

Although the Moon officially reaches its full phase at 8 PM on November 5th (Vietnam time), the most magical time to observe it is during the first hour after it rises above the eastern horizon.

From that low angle, the "moon mirage" makes it appear larger than it actually is – a strange optical phenomenon that occurs when our brains compare the moon to surrounding objects such as trees and buildings.

The low position of the Moon also gives it an orange-yellow hue. For photographers, this is a great opportunity to capture stunning portraits of the Moon.

Even with just a smartphone, you should experiment with photographing the supermoon with tree shadows, rooftops, or people in the foreground – all of which add depth and impact to the image.
