Celebrating Bunpimay in the land of tea

These days, the atmosphere of Bunpimay, the traditional New Year of the Lao ethnic groups, is vibrant in many schools throughout the province. Lao students studying far from home gather together to celebrate the New Year in a warm and affectionate atmosphere. These activities not only help alleviate homesickness but also contribute to spreading Lao cultural identity in Thai Nguyen.

Despite living far from home, 465 Lao students at the School of Culture (Ministry of Public Security) were given the opportunity to celebrate the traditional Bunpimay New Year festival, rich in national identity. The atmosphere at the school was lively and warm with many cultural and artistic activities reflecting the spirit of their homeland.

This is Farsai Thammatheva's third year studying at the School of Culture (Ministry of Public Security), and she, a student in class 11C1, still feels the same excitement every time the Bunpimay New Year festival comes around. Although she couldn't fully recreate the three-day traditional rituals as she would in her homeland, the activities organized by the school provided her and over 460 other Lao students here with a complete, intimate, and culturally rich New Year celebration.

Farsai Thammatheva shared: "The school organizing a full Lunar New Year celebration, just like in our hometown, touched us deeply and eased our homesickness. Our Vietnamese friends also sent their best wishes, adding to our joy."

Not only at the School of Culture, but also in Thai Nguyen, nearly 1,000 Lao students were given the opportunity to celebrate their traditional New Year in a solemn and warm atmosphere. Educational institutions proactively developed many unique cultural and artistic exchange programs, recreating typical rituals such as tying threads around wrists and splashing water for good luck – characteristic cultural features of the Lao New Year. The vibrant, traditional festive atmosphere helped the students alleviate some of their homesickness and strengthen their attachment to their schools.

At the University of Education (Thai Nguyen University), over 120 Lao students also eagerly celebrated the Lunar New Year. On this traditional New Year's Day, Lao students donned vibrant costumes, joined in the graceful Lam Vong dance, and participated in the wrist-tying ritual...

An atmosphere of unity and camaraderie permeated the campuses of the schools. Associate Professor Dr. Mai Xuan Truong, Rector of the University of Education (Thai Nguyen University), said: The traditional Bunpimay New Year has special significance for Lao students. Therefore, the school always creates conditions for them to celebrate the New Year fully and warmly, preserving their national cultural identity.

This year's Bunpimay festival, held from April 14th to 16th, is an occasion for the Lao people to wish for a peaceful and lucky new year. In Thai Nguyen, thanks to the attention of the local government, schools, and the shared affection from Vietnamese friends, Lao students studying abroad had a complete and meaningful New Year celebration far from home. More than just a cultural festival, Bunpimay also serves as a bridge connecting and fostering the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos, helping each student to further cherish and connect with the land that has nurtured their dreams.
