(Dan Tri Newspaper) - According to the Political Commissar of Military Region 2, engineering forces will only proceed with the construction of pontoon bridges when weather conditions and water flow are technically feasible.
On the afternoon of September 10th, dozens of vehicles carrying pontoon bridges and related equipment were assembled by the 249th Engineering Brigade of the Engineering Corps ( Ministry of National Defense ) in Huong Non commune, Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province. This work aims to establish a temporary replacement pontoon bridge for the newly collapsed Phong Chau bridge, which has two collapsed spans. The pontoon bridge will be built approximately 300 meters from the Phong Chau bridge. Representatives from Brigade 249 stated that the unit mobilized 198 soldiers and 78 vehicles during the night of September 9th and the early morning of September 10th. Specifically, Kraz and Ural trucks were used to transport pontoon bridges, canoes, and safety equipment. The pontoon bridge is stored in metal "containers".
On this occasion, Brigade 249 brought two types of canoes, a regular canoe (left) and an electric canoe (right), to carry out the mission. Inspecting and surveying the planned location for a pontoon bridge across the Red River, Lieutenant General Pham Duc Duyen, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of Military Region 2, Ministry of National Defense, stated that the units have done a good job of preparation and surveying. According to the Lieutenant General, when weather conditions and water flow are technically safe, the pontoon bridge will be constructed to ensure the transportation needs of the people as well as the economic development of the locality. The Political Commissar of Military Region 2 assessed that the floodwaters on the Red River are currently very high and flowing rapidly, so it is not yet possible to decide on the timing for installing the pontoon bridge. According to observations by a Dan Tri reporter on the afternoon of September 10th, the Red River's current remains very strong, with high water levels. Therefore, not only has the installation of the pontoon bridge not been carried out, but the search and rescue efforts for the victims are also facing many difficulties and obstacles.
Earlier, on the morning of September 9th, two spans of the Phong Chau bridge (Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province) collapsed, injuring 11 people, three of whom were successfully rescued. In addition, two tractor-trailer trucks and six motorbikes were also damaged. Following the incident, the Phu Tho provincial authorities banned traffic on the Trung Ha and Tu My bridges to allow for repairs.
