Phu Tho: Urgently clarify the cause and solution to the incident at Lo River Bridge

On October 30, Vice Chairman of Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Huy Ngoc and the working delegation conducted an inspection and gave instructions to urgently clarify the cause and handle the damage at the T3 pillar of Lo River Bridge.

In recent days, after discovering that the T3 pier of Song Lo Bridge in Doan Hung Commune had many damages, posing a potential traffic safety risk to people, Phu Tho province sent working groups to examine, grasp the situation, and find a solution.

Faced with this situation, on October 27, the Phu Tho Department of Construction issued a document on organizing traffic flow, and at the same time prohibiting all people and vehicles from passing through the bridge. Along with that, the relevant units were assigned to re-install the sign system, arrange forces to guide and regulate traffic, and coordinate with the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police and Doan Hung Commune Police to ensure safety and avoid congestion in the area. Road management units were required to increase inspection, monitoring, and regularly report on the bridge's condition for timely handling, to avoid unfortunate incidents.

The ban on people and vehicles crossing the Lo River bridge has greatly impacted many aspects of life.

After inspecting the scene with the working group, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Huy Ngoc directed: This is a serious incident, to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the Department of Construction is required to preside over and closely coordinate with relevant departments, branches and units to urgently review and assess the overall extent of damage to all remaining bridge piers as well as the quality of the project. At the same time, invite scientists and leading experts on bridges and roads to organize a workshop to clarify the cause, propose feasible solutions to handle and overcome the incident.

While waiting for the appraisal results, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Construction to preside over and coordinate with Doan Hung commune to urgently develop a plan to ensure the travel of people on both sides of the river is convenient and absolutely safe. In the immediate future, it is necessary to mobilize forces, vehicles and machinery to urgently repair and rebuild Doan Hung ferry; arrange specialized ferries to transport people and vehicles across Lo river, meeting the travel needs of people.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also requested Doan Hung commune to closely coordinate with functional forces to organize inspections and strictly control river transport activities, resolutely handle owners of ferries and boats that spontaneously transport people across the river without ensuring safety. In addition, strengthen propaganda work so that people clearly understand the actual situation, do not panic, and do not share false information on social networks.

Lo River Bridge was started in August 2010 and inaugurated and put into use on March 21, 2015. The project is 517.8m long; includes 9 spans, 8 pillars and 2 abutments; load capacity of 30 tons, approach roads at both ends of the bridge are 850m long, the cross-section of the bridge is 7.5m wide, of which the vehicle section is 6.5m, the railings on each side are 0.5m wide and there is a high-pressure lighting system on the bridge and approach roads.

After 10 years of operation, the Lo River Bridge has shown signs of damage. In recent days, people and vehicles have been banned from crossing the bridge, having to take other routes about 40km away instead of the previous 3km across the bridge, some people have had to go by boat... affecting more than 2,500 households with 9,700 people, causing difficulties in daily life, study and production and business of people on both sides of the river.
