The craft village of Dat To "revives" thanks to the digital revolution and innovative thinking

The long-standing traditional craft villages in the Land of Ancestors are witnessing a strong and comprehensive “revival”. This is not only an effort to “keep the fire of the profession” but also a “revolution” in production and business thinking. By boldly innovating technology, diversifying designs and especially bringing products to the digital space, craft villages such as Ly Nhan blacksmith and Thanh Lang carpentry have overcome difficulties, affirmed their position and reached far in the domestic and foreign markets.

The production facilities in Ly Nhan blacksmith village have proactively brought their products to digital platforms.

From traditional blacksmiths to e-commerce platforms.

The Ly Nhan blacksmith village in Vinh Phu commune, Phu Tho province, has long been famous for its sharp iron and steel products. While many blacksmiths have closed down, Ly Nhan has persevered and developed, not only keeping the craft alive but also creating an impressive rural economic model.

The transformation began with a change in market approach. Instead of relying solely on traditional distribution channels, manufacturers here have proactively brought their products to digital platforms.

Mr. Tran Van Trong, the owner of a production facility, is a prime example of this trend. He shared: “Participating in e-commerce platforms like Shopee, Lazada, TikTok, and Facebook has brought about a very new direction for development. I really want this profession to be preserved for many generations.”

Mr. Tran Van Trong, the owner of a forging workshop in Ly Nhan, is a typical example of someone who participates in e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, TikTok, and Facebook.

Besides expanding the market, the people of Ly Nhan are also focusing on building brands and affirming quality. Many establishments, such as Da Ka owned by Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan, have been awarded OCOP 3-star certification, creating strong trust among customers. Notably, personalized service has created uniqueness for the products.

Ms. Do Thi Thu Thuy said: “We have a 3-star OCOP certificate and a special service of engraving each customer's name on each knife. Customers feel the personalization and are very pleased.”

This transformation has helped the blacksmithing village shed its image of being backward and rudimentary. Mr. Vu Van Tan, who has been involved in the craft for over 50 years, shared about the innovation process: "Our products used to be very rudimentary. Now, we are finding ways to produce knives that meet the requirements in terms of quantity, quality, and at a much lower price than before."

Currently, Vinh Phu commune has over 670 households engaged in blacksmithing, supplying 20,000 to 30,000 products to the market every day.

Thanks to machinery and especially modern sales methods, Ly Nhan has achieved large-scale production. The entire Vinh Phu commune currently has over 670 households engaged in blacksmithing, supplying 20,000-30,000 products to the market daily. The average income per household ranges from 500,000 to 1 million VND per day, a desirable figure in rural areas. From calloused hands to the digital space, the blacksmithing craft of Vinh Phu has become an effective bridge between tradition and modernity.

The carpentry profession is experiencing a new lease of life thanks to advanced technology and the younger generation.

Along with the Ly Nhan blacksmith village, the Thanh Lang carpentry village in Xuan Lang commune, Phu Tho province, is also witnessing a similar transformation. The demands of adapting to the modern market are forcing carpenters to switch to new production technologies.

Craftsmen in Thanh Lang carpentry village, Xuan Lang commune, are switching to new production technologies to adapt to the modern market.

Mr. Duong Van Hiep, Chairman of the Thanh Lang Woodworking Village Association in Xuan Lang commune, emphasized: "Introducing modern machinery has contributed significantly because in the past, the machinery was rudimentary and productivity was low. Now, more products are produced and the income of the craftsmen is also better."

The participation of the younger generation has played a crucial role in this revolution. Mr. Do Van Dai, after many years working in South Korea, returned to his hometown to open a workshop, introducing advanced equipment and technology into production to "replace concerns about human safety and product quality." The young people's mindset of integration and proactive application of technology has helped the Thanh Lang carpentry village not only preserve its traditions but also meet the demands of the international market.

Currently, Thanh Lang wood products not only serve domestic needs but also reach Laos and Cambodia. Xuan Lang commune currently has 16 businesses and approximately 250 workshop owners, providing employment for over 2,000 workers. Each year, the woodworking village generates about 160 billion VND, making a significant contribution to the local economy.

The challenge of sustainable development

The strong resurgence of traditional craft villages in Phu Tho is the result of admirable self-effort by the people, combined with the attention of the local government. The blacksmithing of Ly Nhan and the carpentry of Thanh Lang are testaments to the perseverance and creativity of the artisans of the ancestral land.

The blacksmithing craft of Ly Nhan is a testament to the perseverance and creativity of the craftsmen.

However, the challenge of sustainable development remains significant. Issues such as environmental pollution management, transportation infrastructure development, and spatial planning for craft villages that align with urbanization trends are major obstacles.

To help traditional craft villages thrive, Phu Tho province needs to continue implementing timely support mechanisms and policies, especially in quality control and branding. The goal is to both preserve the unique identity of craft villages and create conditions for rural industries to develop in a modern, green, and sustainable direction, firmly establishing the position of traditional craft village products in domestic and international markets.
