Earlier, according to initial information from the Geophysical Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences, early this morning (July 30), a tsunami appeared north of Russia's Kuril Islands after a strong earthquake occurred off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Pacific Ocean with the epicenter about 150km southeast of the capital city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky of Kamchatka province, at a depth of 17km. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the earthquake at a magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter scale.
The fault, which runs at least 200km southwest along a deep-sea trench, has been identified by seismologists as a typical subduction earthquake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also issued a tsunami watch for all of Hawaii and Alaska's Aleutian Islands, as well as parts of Japan's coastline.

A tsunami warning has also been issued for Japan's Pacific coast, with the Meteorological Agency warning that waves up to 1 meter high could hit land between 10am and 11am local time. The agency advised people to stay away from coastal areas.
According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), with a magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter scale, the impact of the earthquake will be very large. However, the level of destruction also depends on what is around that area.
"With a magnitude of 8.7, it can be said that the impact is very large, up to the point of destruction. If it happens in densely populated areas, the damage will be terrible, and the Kamchatka peninsula is quite remote. However, the earthquake occurred far away from Vietnam so it did not affect our country," said Dr. Xuan Anh.
According to Mr. Xuan Anh, since the beginning of the year, this agency has recorded 209 earthquakes, including 20 with a magnitude greater than 3.5 in Vietnam's territory and sea.
Experts say that in addition to the induced earthquakes concentrated in hydroelectric reservoir areas such as Kon Tum and Quang Nam (old), there are some natural earthquakes. Natural earthquakes occur on some fault zones according to the rule that when enough energy is accumulated, an earthquake occurs; the larger the earthquake, the less likely it is to recur.
