According to updated information at 8:10 AM (Vietnam time), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) stated that the earthquake off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East has a magnitude of 8.7, higher than the initial magnitude of 8 determined by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Meanwhile, a representative from the branch of the United Geophysical Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5. The fissure extended southwestward, stretching approximately 200km.
According to the latest information, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for waves as high as 3 meters that could strike the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan and the Ogasawara Islands in the south.
The agency added that it had recorded magnitude 2 earthquakes on Japan's 7-point seismic intensity scale in Hokkaido.
From the US, the Honolulu Emergency Management Department – the capital of Hawaii – has called for the evacuation of several coastal areas of the state due to the risk of a dangerous tsunami following the earthquake.
Previously, according to the USGS, the earthquake occurred in the sea 126 km east-southeast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, with a focal depth of 18.2 km. It is still unclear whether any damage occurred in the Russian Far East.
