Pokrivac, who played for Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco, and Salzburg, passed away at the age of 39, leaving many in the football world feeling a sense of loss.
According to a statement from the Croatian Football Federation (HNS), Pokrivac, who plays for the fifth-division team NK Vojnic, was involved in an accident while traveling with several teammates in the Karlova C area of central Croatia on April 18th. The accident involved four vehicles, and in addition to Pokrivac, another person also died. Two other people in Pokrivac's car are in critical condition.
Pokrivac was one of the key players for the Croatian national team from 2008 to 2010, with 15 caps. He was a teammate of Luka Modric at Dinamo Zagreb from a young age, and the two also played together for Croatia at Euro 2008, where Pokrivac played the full 90 minutes in the match against Poland.
The player, born in 1985, faced a major shock in 2015 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, forcing him to retire from professional football. However, his love for football kept Pokrivac playing in lower leagues in Croatia until the end of his life.
This accident is a huge shock not only to Pokrivac's family and fans, but also to Croatian football. This talented player will forever be remembered as part of Croatia's golden generation of football.
