Dong Nai creates breakthrough in organic agriculture

In the general context of the world, Dong Nai's agricultural sector has oriented to promote the development of organic agriculture and has created a breakthrough in this field.

According to the People's Committee of Dong Nai province, in 2023, the province's agricultural, forestry and fishery production value is estimated to increase by 3.94%, of which agriculture will increase by 4%, a high increase compared to other localities in the Southeast region. This shows that agricultural production continues to develop stably and maintain a good growth rate compared to the same period.

In the coming time, the province will restructure, the agricultural sector will develop towards increasing added value and sustainable development; improving the value, efficiency and quality of products, based on market requirements; enhancing the competitive advantage of products of the industry and the entire agricultural sector. In which, there is a structure to build a comprehensive agricultural sector towards sustainability and modernity.

By November 2023, the whole province will have more than 18 hectares of crops certified for organic production, an increase of more than 2.6 times compared to the end of 2022; by the end of 2023, the whole province will have more than 22 hectares of crops certified for organic production. Crops certified for organic production are mainly the province's key crops such as pepper, durian, vegetables... The province is also implementing the construction of 80 organic production models with a scale of nearly 1,500 hectares of crops and nearly 24,000 livestock...

To develop organic agriculture, Dong Nai province has approved the Project on developing organic agriculture in the area for the period 2021-2030 with the goal that by 2025, the total organic and organic-oriented growing area in the province will be 1,322 hectares, accounting for 0.49% of the province's agricultural land area; of which the organic-oriented growing area is 1,251 hectares, accounting for 0.46% of the province's agricultural land area; the organic growing area is 72 hectares, accounting for 0.03% of the province's agricultural land area.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Nai province has proposed to build 8 concentrated organic agricultural production areas in the area, including: Tan Phu district with Dak Lua commune area; 4 communes area (Nam Cat Tien, Nui Tuong, Phu Lap and Ta Lai); Dinh Quan district with Thanh Son commune area; Vinh Cuu district with Hieu Liem commune area and Phu Ly commune area, Xuan Loc district with Suoi Cao commune area; Cam My district with Lam San commune area and Nhon Trach district with Phuoc An commune area...

The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also said that he has coordinated with localities and units to monitor the development of 2 central agricultural extension projects including: the project "Building a model of sustainable cashew intensive farming" in Phu Ly commune, Vinh Cuu district with an area of 5 hectares of 5 participating farmers. Up to now, all cashew areas in the project have grown and developed well; the project "Building a model of high-quality, productive pig breeding, strengthening biosafety measures in the southern provinces"... In addition, the Department continues to implement the contents of the project "Building a model of applying IoT technology to produce black termite mushrooms in greenhouses".

Currently, localities in the province are focusing on replicating organic production models with diverse crop and livestock products. Participating in organic production investment are enterprises, cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmers. In the coming time, the province will focus on introducing models and solutions for organic agricultural development, building linkage chains; prioritizing pilot models and new factors to replicate, contributing to completing the goals and tasks of developing organic agriculture in the province.

Organic agriculture development is increasingly being actively participated by farmers because it reduces production costs, is an effective solution to produce safe products, is low cost and can be applied widely.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Nai province, shared that the province has many advantages to develop agricultural production with a total production land area of over 270 thousand hectares, a diverse structure of crops and livestock. However, developing organic agriculture in an industrial province like Dong Nai currently faces many difficulties. In addition, current organic agriculture models are still just "buffer zones", without unified production processes...

“The province will prioritize and promote the construction of supply chains and the development of pilot models. This will create practical examples and motivate new participants, thereby forming a large team to develop organic agriculture, contributing to the province's overall goals,” said Mr. Thang.
