Traders harvest coconuts in farmers' gardens in Cho Gao commune.

According to reports, the price of fresh coconuts in the province is currently high. Specifically, Malaysian coconuts with a round bottom are being purchased by traders at around 90,000 VND per dozen (12 coconuts), while Malaysian coconuts with a round bottom are priced at around 110,000 VND per dozen.

In Cho Gao commune, Dong Thap province, when we arrived, Mr. Muoi Hanh's family (Binh Hoa hamlet) had just finished harvesting coconuts. Mr. Hanh's family cultivated 7 acres of Malaysian coconuts and sold them for 90,000 VND per dozen.

“Of the seven acres of coconut trees in my family's plantation, only four are bearing fruit. This harvest brought in 12 million dong. Coconuts have been fetching high prices recently. I hope this price will last longer. Now, fertilizer and pesticide prices are very high,” said Mr. Hanh.

After harvesting, Mr. Hanh's coconuts are transported to the main road to be loaded onto trucks for distribution.

Currently, the Chinese market is experiencing slow demand, mainly for hard-shelled coconuts, which take about 110 days to harvest. At this time, few farmers are willing to extend the harvesting period like that. Given this situation, the supply of fresh coconuts is likely to decrease further after the April 30th holiday.”

Traders are buying coconuts from farmers in Tan Phu commune.

In Tan Phu commune, Dong Thap province, following the general trend, coconut prices are currently high. Nguyen Thanh Sang, a coconut trader in Tan Phu commune, said that compared to about a month ago, the price of Malaysian coconuts has increased by approximately 25,000 VND per dozen (12 coconuts).

At this price, the farmers are making a decent profit. However, due to the effects of the hot weather, the coconut harvest yield has decreased significantly. On average, Mr. Sang only manages to buy about 1,000 coconuts per day.

In contrast to fresh coconuts, the price of dried coconuts in the province remains low. Mr. Duong Tan Si (Tan Thoi commune, Dong Thap province) cultivates about 1 hectare of dried coconuts. Mr. Si shared: “Currently, traders are buying dried coconuts at around 3,500 VND per fruit. However, due to the dry season, many coconuts are hanging out to dry. Last year, at this time, the price of dried coconuts was over 200,000 VND per dozen, but this year it is at a low level.”
