The Long Chánh landfill is overloaded and causing environmental pollution.

Recently, the People's Procuratorate of Region 2, Dong Thap province, recommended measures to remedy and prevent violations of environmental laws at this landfill.

According to the People's Procuratorate of Region 2, through its work of supervising compliance with the law in state management activities aimed at protecting public and state interests, the unit has verified information reported by citizens regarding the frequent fires at the landfill, causing environmental pollution.

Through on-site surveys and verification with several households, the waste collection point in Binh Xuan ward has experienced localized fires, with many smoldering fires lasting from March 2026 until now. This has resulted in the release of smoke into the environment, causing foul odors and containing many toxic gases over a wide area, directly affecting the daily lives, production, and health of people in the surrounding area.

Fires frequently occur at the Long Chánh landfill.

According to a representative from the People's Committee of Binh Xuan ward, the cause of the landfill fire was the prolonged hot weather, which dried out the garbage, creating favorable conditions for chemical reactions that caused the landfill to spontaneously combust.

To address environmental pollution and ensure public health, the People's Procuracy of Region 2 recommends that the Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Xuan Ward direct relevant units to definitively resolve the garbage dump fire to ensure the living conditions and health of affected residents; strengthen inspection and supervision of compliance with and handling of household waste in the area; implement measures to prevent and limit similar garbage fires; and strictly punish violations of environmental protection laws.

Local authorities need to raise awareness and build a sense of environmental protection within the community; and encourage people to participate in maintaining hygiene and protecting the environment.

According to the People's Committee of Binh Xuan Ward, the Long Chanh landfill currently receives and collects household waste from Binh Xuan Ward and the surrounding wards of Son Qui, Go Cong, and Long Thuan. The landfill covers an area of nearly 6 hectares, surrounded by residential areas and natural waterways. The amount of accumulated waste at the landfill is estimated at approximately 160,000 tons and is currently overloaded. Each year, it receives about 36,000-40,000 tons of waste, averaging over 103 tons per day.

Due to the overload and environmental pollution at the Long Chanh landfill, the People's Committee of Binh Xuan Ward has sent a document to the People's Committee of Dong Thap Province requesting consideration of a plan to completely close the Long Chanh landfill because of its severe overload, environmental pollution, and persistent fire and explosion risks.

Currently, the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction in Region 4 (Dong Thap province) is also constructing a fence around the area to limit the amount of water and waste spilling out.

During a recent on-site inspection of the Long Chánh landfill, the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, Nguyen Phuoc Thien, requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the landfill from its operation to the present, identify the location of the landfill cells, the landfilling process, and propose solutions and treatment approaches.
