At noon on May 27th, the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting announced that from May 29th, the widespread heatwave will end in the North and begin to subside in the Central region.
According to the meteorological agency, from tomorrow, May 28th, a weak mass of cool air from mainland China will move southward. This cool air mass will weaken the hot low-pressure area in the West, reducing the heatwave in the North, which will only occur in the midland and lowland areas of Northern Vietnam with maximum temperatures commonly ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in some places.
Experts from the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting stated that during the intense and exceptionally severe heatwave from May 22nd to 27th, many localities experienced temperatures that broke historical records for May. Specifically, the Uong Bi station (Quang Ninh) recorded a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius on May 25th, surpassing the historical temperature set at this station in 2013; the Hiep Hoa station ( Bac Ninh ) reached 39.7 degrees Celsius and the Bac Giang station reached 39.4 degrees Celsius - both exceeding previous historical temperatures.
In Hanoi (Ha Dong station), the temperature on May 26th reached 41.1°C, the second highest recorded temperature in May at this station (to date). According to the meteorological agency, the highest temperature ever recorded in May at the Ha Dong station was 41.3°C in 2019. However, the absolute highest temperature (compared at any time) ever recorded in Hanoi was 42.5°C on June 4th, 2017.

According to meteorological agencies, Hanoi is currently one of the epicenters of this heatwave. This is due to Hanoi being affected by both a hot low-pressure system and Foehn winds, as well as the urban heat island effect with its high density of concrete. Actual temperatures observed in Hanoi are consistently 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than in neighboring areas.
On the afternoon of May 27th, the Northern Delta region, Phu Tho province , and the area from Thanh Hoa to Hue continued to experience intense and exceptionally intense heat with temperatures generally ranging from 38-40 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some places. Other areas in the North and the South Central coastal region had temperatures generally ranging from 37-39 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
Due to high temperatures combined with low humidity, authorities are warning of a high risk of explosions, fires in residential areas, and forest fires. This situation is expected to improve from May 29th.
