- In recent times, under the guidance of the Party Committee and the local government, many households in Na Duong commune have boldly switched to different crop structures, introducing cucumber cultivation into production and linking it with consumption. This approach has been contributing to clear economic benefits, helping people increase their income and improve their living standards.

Visiting Na Duong commune in late May 2026, we easily encountered people busily harvesting cucumbers. Ms. Vi Thi Huong from Ban San village said: "My family started growing baby cucumbers in 2023 on 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) under a production cooperative. This is a short-term crop, ready for harvest after only about 35 to 40 days of planting. The average yield is 1.2 - 1.5 tons per sao. With selling prices of 10-12 thousand VND/kg (grade 1) and 7-8 thousand VND/kg (grade 2), after deducting expenses, my family earns a profit of about 35 million VND per crop. Recognizing the high economic efficiency, in 2026, my family will expand the area to 5 sao, with an expected yield of about 7 tons this year. Thanks to the product buyback agreement, the output is stable, and my family can produce with peace of mind."
Not only Ms. Huong's family, but many people in Na Duong commune have also boldly converted their less productive agricultural land to cucumber cultivation. According to statistics, the entire commune currently has over 75 hectares of cucumbers, mainly baby cucumbers, concentrated in the villages of Ban San, Po Kinh, Hua Cau, etc. The total production reaches over 2,000 tons per year. Unlike the spontaneous development of the past, since 2023, several cooperatives and purchasing centers have implemented production linkages with farmers. Accordingly, the purchasing units provide agricultural supplies, technical guidance to farmers, and sign contracts to guarantee product purchase. Currently, nearly 100% of the cucumber growing area in the commune is under production linkage.
Ms. Vi Thi Nghia, Director of Ban San Cooperative, said: "Since 2024, the cooperative has been linking production with local people in cucumber cultivation to create a stable market for the product. This year's cucumber crop, the cooperative is linking production with over 100 households, covering a total area of about 40 hectares. Participating households receive support in terms of seeds, fertilizers, technical guidance, and product purchase contracts. Thanks to this, people are confident in expanding their cultivated area, focusing on crop care, and improving productivity and product quality. On average, the cooperative purchases about 1,000 tons of cucumbers annually to supply processing facilities in Bac Ninh province."
According to local farmers, cucumbers are relatively easy to grow, suitable for the local climate and soil conditions, and have a short growing season. However, to ensure good growth and high yields, growers need to pay attention to soil preparation, creating raised beds to prevent waterlogging; and regularly inspect the fields to promptly detect and control pests and diseases. During cultivation, farmers should build trellises for the plants to climb, prune branches, and maintain appropriate moisture levels to ensure stable growth and uniform, beautiful fruit.
Reportedly, this year's weather has been relatively favorable, resulting in good cucumber growth, fewer pests and diseases, and yields of 1.2-1.5 tons per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). The selling price of cucumbers has also increased slightly by 1-2 thousand VND/kg compared to last year. Thanks to a purchasing agent who buys directly from the fields, farmers no longer have to worry about market access or being subjected to price manipulation as before. From cucumber cultivation, households earn an average income of 10 to 50 million VND per crop per year (depending on the cultivated area). This motivates many households in the area to continue expanding their production area in subsequent seasons.
Mr. To Van Thoai, Acting Head of the Economic Department of Na Duong commune, said: "According to the assessment, the cucumber cultivation linkage model not only helps people change their production mindset from small-scale to concentrated commodity production but also contributes to increasing the value of local agricultural products."
The participation of cooperatives and purchasing units in linking and guaranteeing product sales has contributed to creating stable outlets, helping people feel secure in investing in production. In the coming time, the department will continue to advise the People's Committee of the commune to promote propaganda and mobilize people to maintain and expand the area of cucumber cultivation in a linked manner; at the same time, coordinate with specialized agencies to organize training courses and guide people to apply science and technology to production, gradually improving productivity and product quality to meet market requirements.
It is evident that the implementation of production linkages has gradually helped cucumber cultivation become a stable source of income for many households in Na Duong commune. With favorable market access and the support of cooperatives, purchasing units, and local authorities, people are increasingly confident in developing and expanding the model, thereby contributing to increased production efficiency and higher incomes.
