On August 19, the People's Committee of Son La province held the inauguration ceremony of the Son La city drainage and wastewater treatment system.

This is a project to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

The Son La city drainage and wastewater treatment system project started in 2012, using ODA capital from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, non-refundable aid from the Swiss Government and counterpart capital from the Vietnamese Government, with a total investment of more than 932 billion VND.

The project is invested by the ODA Project Management Board of Son La province, with the scale including: Wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 6,900 m3/day and night using biological wastewater treatment technology (AO); 7 wastewater collection pumping stations, each with a capacity of 67 m3/hour to more than 780 m3/hour; a system of primary, secondary, and tertiary wastewater collection pipelines and a pressure pipeline of more than 75 km; a level 3 network connection system for 9,000 households and agencies and units in the area to the general wastewater collection and treatment system of the project; upgrading a 2.5 km long rainwater drainage system; renovating and repairing 8.3 km of inner-city roads.

Mr. Gert Buechner, Head of the consulting team of the GKW-IGIP-ICC-ANVIET Joint Venture (Federal Republic of Germany), said: This is a wastewater collection and treatment system in the central wards of Son La province, invested synchronously with modern advanced technology lines according to European standards; applying biological wastewater treatment technology, including ultraviolet disinfection. Therefore, wastewater is brought to the treatment plant through a separate drainage system without going through a septic tank.

Currently, only 4 localities nationwide have successfully applied this model; of which, Son La province is the only locality in the northern provinces.

The plant uses an electronic control system that automatically collects, monitors, controls, and connects all equipment between the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations during operation.

The quality of treated wastewater meets the standards of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, allowing discharge into water sources for domestic use; before being discharged into the environment, it is inspected and monitored online 24/24 hours, through an automatic data connection system from Son La wastewater treatment plant to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment .

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chairman of Son La Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Dinh Viet commended and acknowledged the efforts and high sense of responsibility of departments, branches, construction units, consultants, supervisors, and the consensus and support of the people.

Along with that is the support and assistance of the German Reconstruction Bank which has accompanied, sponsored and created favorable conditions both financially and technically throughout the project implementation process.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province, the project's operation is of great significance to the sustainable development and living environment of the people, bringing practical and long-term benefits. Among them, it helps to reduce flooding, effectively treat urban wastewater, and meet environmental standards.

This is also the premise for the wards in the Nam La stream area to develop rapidly, greenly and sustainably; associated with the commitment to environmental protection, climate change response and sustainable development, with the goal of improving the quality of life of the people.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Viet requested the Son La Provincial ODA Project Management Board to focus on operating the project in accordance with the approved plan and process, ensuring quality and progress as committed, and complying with legal regulations.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province awarded Certificates of Merit to 2 collectives and 6 individuals with outstanding achievements in implementing the project; the Provincial ODA Project Management Board awarded many Certificates of Merit to collectives and individuals./.
