Explosion of large-scale national music festivals

In the past, political art programs were often considered "picky audiences" and had difficulty competing with other forms of mass entertainment.

The ceremonial and traditional staging make the audience mainly middle-aged and elderly; the stage is simple, familiar revolutionary songs are often performed by veteran singers in a standard manner, with little innovation, so it is difficult to create surprises.

Meanwhile, stadiums only really explode with audiences with young music or Kpop concerts, such as Blackpink in 2023 attracting 67,000 people in 2 shows, or Anh trai say hi , Anh trai vu ngan cong dot gai with more than 30,000 audiences per show.

However, since the 50th anniversary of National Reunification Day, revolutionary and traditional music and national music festivals have also proven to have great appeal.

In April, the North-South Rendezvous at My Dinh Stadium had 12,000 attendees, while the Reunification Spring in Ho Chi Minh City attracted about 5,000 spectators.

The concerts "V-concert - Radiant Vietnam" (August 9), "Fatherland in the heart" (August 10) and "Proud to be Vietnamese" attracted 25,000, 50,000 and 30,000 audiences respectively, mainly young people and Gen Z (Photo: VTV, Nguyen Ha Nam ).

In Hanoi, during the historic August days, the music market also witnessed a turning point, a rare phenomenon when a series of large-scale political and artistic programs exploded and created a fever on social networks.

These events attract tens of thousands of young and Gen Z audiences, and are known by names such as “national concerts” or “patriotic concerts.”

A typical example is the program "Fatherland in the Heart" at My Dinh National Stadium on the evening of August 10. With a capacity of more than 50,000 spectators - mostly young people - this event witnessed an unprecedented ticket fever.

According to the organizers, the online ticket registration portal "crashed" after only 9 minutes, with about 3 million visits but only 20,000 people successfully registered.

Although the tickets are free, this phenomenon is still rare in political and artistic programs. Before the show, many ticket exchange groups were active, with “ticket brokers” even paying more than 1 million VND for a good seat.

The moment 50,000 people sang the National Anthem in the program "Fatherland in the Heart" left a strong feeling of emotion and pride (Photo: Nguyen Ha Nam).

The music night " Fatherland in the Heart" witnessed the moment when 50,000 spectators stood up to sing "Tien Quan Ca" , put their hands on their chests and passed the national flag, creating an emotional image that spread strongly on social networks.

Meritorious Artist Dang Duong - one of the singers participating in the program - shared his feeling overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the audience: "I have participated in many art nights, but this is the first time I have sung red music in a stadium with 50,000 people. The enthusiasm of the audience fueled our fire, making us extremely excited."

Previously (August 9), the Vietnam Exhibition Center in Co Loa, Dong Anh, Hanoi became the meeting place for more than 25,000 audiences in the V-Concert - Radiant Vietnam . The program also sold out tickets just a few days after opening for sale.

VTV Deputy General Director Do Thanh Hai emphasized: " V-Concert is part of VTV's long-term strategy to actively participate in the chain of creativity and development of the cultural industry."

This event not only attracts tens of thousands of spectators but also combines modern elements such as traditional orchestra mixed with electronic melodies, creating a resonance between traditional and contemporary art.

Similarly, the concert Proud to be Vietnamese on the evening of August 17 at My Dinh Stadium Square (Hanoi) also had tickets sought after by audiences before the G hour.

Although tickets are free via online registration, many Facebook groups are still selling them for prices ranging from 500,000 VND (standing tickets) to 3.5 million VND depending on location. Some people even claim that ticket prices will increase closer to showtime, and those who are late may not get tickets.

The music night also left an impression with the moment when 30,000 spectators sang the National Anthem with Tung Duong, creating an emotional and proud atmosphere.

What's notable is that these concerts don't have any "S-list stars" or global phenomenons to draw crowds.

Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper - Mr. Le Quoc Minh - once emphasized at the program To Quoc Trong Tim : "When coming to concerts, the audience often expects the appearance of famous stars. But for us, To Quoc Trong Tim has no "stars", except for the only star on the national flag".

On his personal page, technology entrepreneur Do Cao Bao commented: “There are no international stars, no trendy music, just familiar songs about the homeland and country. But that is what touches the heart, arousing national pride.” His opinion quickly received a lot of agreement and sharing.

“Fanchant” is the way to call the audience cheering for their idols by shouting or singing along in unison. However, at My Dinh Stadium on the nights of August 10 and August 17, although Fatherland in the Heart or Proud to be Vietnamese did not have a specific “idol”, fanchant still resounded at every song: National Anthem, Ho keo Phao, Dat nuoc tron vui, Nam em tren mot tou xe tang…

What's special is that songs familiar to generations 6x, 7x, 8x are now sung with great enthusiasm by Gen Y and Gen Z.

In the stands, the lights from phones and light sticks of various colors - most notably the red flag with yellow star light stick - created a brilliant wave. The close-up camera showed young people "burning" themselves out in every area, something that is usually only seen at youth or international music concerts.

Audience member Ngoc Linh (21 years old) emotionally shared: “I have never lived in such an emotional and heroic musical space. The music night made me more proud and deeply grateful to the soldiers who sacrificed for independence and freedom in exchange for today's peace.”

On social networks, the “national concerts” also became a hot topic, with a series of emotional comments: “Proud and moved to tears”, “So good and meaningful”, “Explosive emotions”, “Magnificent and proud”...

Explaining the appeal: Revolutionary music becomes a trend among young people

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter , media expert Hong Quang Minh commented: "The fact that tens of thousands of young audiences are eager to attend revolutionary and patriotic music concerts is a sign of the awakening of a musical stream that was once associated with the previous generation, and at the same time reflects the process of redefining cultural values in modern entertainment life."

He believes that the combination of modern stage technology, magnificent lighting and sound, the presence of young, influential voices and creative storytelling has brought a new look to political and artistic programs: youthful, energetic and touching.

“In the context of young people yearning to find their roots, identity and sense of belonging in a turbulent world, patriotic music becomes a “cultural code” for them to sympathize and express national pride in a strong but non-dogmatic way.

The transformation in stage language has turned a seemingly old music genre into a new phenomenon of contemporary cultural life," Mr. Minh emphasized.

Expert Hong Quang Minh also explained that the power of patriotic music concerts lies in their ability to activate the community and arouse a spirit of solidarity - something that few music genres can do.

The concert space is not only a place to enjoy art, but also becomes a "collective ritual" - where tens of thousands of spectators, mostly young people - sing together in emotion and heroism, thereby evoking responsibility for the country.

Mr. Minh believes that young artists do not simply perform but also play the role of storytellers, inspirers, and connect the current generation with historical memories.

“When organized with a modern mindset and creative storytelling language, revolutionary music concerts bring a familiar, proud but not outdated image of the Fatherland.

The spread on social media further amplifies this message, turning each performance into a powerful inspirational push,” the expert expressed.

According to Mr. Minh, recent political and artistic programs and national music festivals do not follow the traditional song-dance-music motif, but are staged as multi-layered "musical films", applying LED technology, stereoscopic lighting effects and open space layouts.

For example, Under the Glorious Flag creates an impression with the image of the red flag with a yellow star running along the deep background, making the audience feel covered under the flag's shadow. V-Concert - Radiant Vietnam brings a youthful, futuristic light festival atmosphere, breaking the boundary between the stage and the audience.

Young audiences get to experience and immerse themselves in the flow of history and culture right in the performance space (Photo: Nguyen Ha Nam).

Music researcher Nguyen Quang Long believes that the strong attraction of revolutionary music in life, especially for young people, comes from many important factors.

According to him, firstly, today’s revolutionary music has a harmonious combination of traditional and modern elements. Songs that originally had folk and heroic melodies are remixed by young musicians with Pop, R&B, EDM… but still retain the original spirit.

Thanks to that, those "songs that go with the times" are both close to the need to enjoy contemporary music and evoke historical values.

The expert also emphasized the role of large-scale performances associated with important holidays. “Concerts and special cultural events on April 30 or September 2 have created a very strong resonance effect.

When veteran artists stand on the same stage with young, popular singers, the audience can feel both traditional values and freshness, close to today's generation. That is how the spirit of national pride is vividly aroused," music researcher Nguyen Quang Long shared.

Another factor he appreciated was the artistic diversity and application of technology in performance.

According to experts, the combination of modern orchestra with traditional instruments, along with skillfully handled lighting, sound, technological stage and historical images, has taken the audience beyond the scope of enjoying music.

They get to experience, play roles, and immerse themselves in the flow of history and culture right in the performance space.

According to Nguyen Quang Long, thanks to these factors, revolutionary music has become a strong source of patriotic inspiration, continuing to inspire today's young generation.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son - Full-time member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society - stated that recent "national concerts" have been organized on a large scale, combining modern technology, lighting, and impressive staging.

“Young people naturally love new things and rich experiences, so when revolutionary music is given a new look, both preserving its traditional spirit and being highly entertaining, they are easily attracted.

The resonance of tens of thousands of audiences singing together, raising the red flag with yellow star, creating an extremely emotional "sea of people effect" - it is an experience that no online platform can replace.

More importantly, in the context of the country entering a new era with many opportunities and challenges, those music nights have aroused pride, nurtured a sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute," Mr. Bui Hoai Son affirmed.
