These two key projects demonstrate the aspiration to rise and the belief in a strong future for Vietnam.
The groundbreaking ceremony of Viettel Research and Development Center today is also a content that Viettel is vigorously implementing under the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 15, when the Prime Minister visited and worked with Viettel on research programs and production of high-tech defense industry.
An important piece in Viettel's overall research and development infrastructure
At the ceremony, Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, said that 15 years ago, Viettel began implementing a research and development strategy with the goal of mastering technology, from design to production and operation.
Up to now, Viettel has formed a high-tech industry with two spearheads: defense industry and telecommunications industry, mastering more than 40 product lines in 10 equipment and weapons industries.
Although it has invested in 6 research and production facilities, the current infrastructure still does not meet the increasingly urgent requirements. Viettel needs a large-scale center to accelerate the implementation of research on assigned national strategic technologies in the coming time. And the Viettel Research and Development Center project is an important piece in the overall picture of Viettel's research and development infrastructure.
Viettel Research and Development Center Model
The Viettel Research and Development Center project has an investment of 10,000 billion VND on an area of 13.3 hectares in Hoa Lac High-Tech Park. The project consists of 6 smart buildings, expected to be completed in 2030. This will be a key R&D center, closing the entire process of research - design - testing - production of high-tech products Made in Vietnam.
At the same time, the project is built with a system that ensures absolute safety and security, uses the most modern technology and is protected through many layers. It is expected that this project will attract 2,500 high-quality personnel.
The center will serve research and development activities of military, civilian, and dual-use products to serve the high-tech industrial production research strategy and national defense and security tasks of Viettel Group, according to the policies and orientations of the Party, State, and Ministry of National Defense .
That is research and development in the military and high-tech industry fields: mastering the technologies to manufacture missiles, cruise engines, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), remote sensing satellites, radars, etc. to create military equipment products suitable for the requirements of protecting the Fatherland.
Research and development in the field of digital technology such as: Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, etc. to develop devices, software, solutions, platforms, and services that meet the actual needs of the market and are in line with world technology trends.
An Khanh Data Center – the foundation for national digital transformation
An Khanh Data Center is built on an area of 1.9 hectares, with a total investment of 17,500 billion VND, a designed capacity of 60MW - expected to become the largest data center in the North. Phase 1 is expected to operate from the second quarter of 2026, and by 2030 it will be upgraded to Viettel's second Hyperscale Data Center.
The project is designed according to Uptime Tier III standards, integrating AI developed by Viettel, a 5-layer security system and modern cooling technology, ensuring green and sustainable operations, towards the Government's Net Zero goal. This will be a key infrastructure, serving the digital transformation of the Government, the Ministry of National Defense, large enterprises and the deployment of artificial intelligence on a national scale.
Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, emphasized that Viettel is committed to completing the project on schedule, ensuring quality exceeding requirements and meeting international standards. The two projects will be guaranteed safe throughout the construction and operation process, not only as modern research infrastructure today but also as a sustainable foundation for future generations.
In 2025, Viettel has deployed the construction of a series of projects of strategic significance such as: Tan Phu Trung Data Center, Viettel Da Nang Building... contributing to the completion of a modern technology infrastructure network, meeting the goals of national defense development and digital transformation.
