Germany "shocked" by Russia's Oreshnik missile system

On December 27, the German newspaper Bild , citing documents from the country's Foreign Ministry, reported that Germany is almost powerless against Russia's Oreshnik medium-range missile system.

According to Bild , the German Foreign Ministry's report said that the ministry has asked military experts from the German Army (Bundeswehr) to analyze the country's readiness for a hypothetical attack with Oreshnik missiles, after the system was used to attack the Yuzhmash plant in Dnepropetrovsk (Dnipro), Ukraine on November 21.

The document reveals that the Patriot air defense system is not suitable to counter the Oreshnik due to the missile's flight speed, maneuverability and the fact that the missile is equipped with detachable warheads.

According to the Financial Times , the Oreshnik missile system that Moscow first used was built by Russian companies but still relied on advanced manufacturing equipment of Western origin.

Two leading Russian weapons design institutes that Ukrainian intelligence believes developed the Oreshnik missile have both advertised jobs for workers “with knowledge of metalworking systems” produced by German and Japanese companies.
