VHO - On January 22nd, which is the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, the Hue Imperial Citadel Relics Conservation Center organized the "Thuong Tieu" ceremony (the ceremony of erecting the ceremonial pole) at Trieu Mieu and Hien Lam Cac - The Mieu relics, within the Hue Imperial Palace heritage site.

The pole-raising ceremony is reenacted according to rituals that were once performed during the Nguyen Dynasty, signaling the start of the Lunar New Year holiday.

Artists from the Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre "played" the roles of guards and officials of the Nguyen dynasty to perform the rituals of the pole-raising ceremony.

The ceremonial pole, approximately 20 meters long, beautifully straight and even, was carried by guards from Hien Nhon Gate (east of Hue Imperial Citadel) to Trieu Mieu and The Mieu historical sites.

The procession was solemnly recreated with ancient court rituals and ceremonial music.

Before erecting the ceremonial pole, the Board of Directors of the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center will preside over the offering ceremony. The offering tray will be arranged with traditional symbolic offerings such as bananas, roasted pig, sticky rice, betel nuts, fruits, tea, and wine…

After the ceremony, the soldiers dug the earth, pulled ropes, and skillfully used their strength to erect the ceremonial pole.

At the top of the ceremonial pole, a box containing the imperial seal, couplets, and red cloth banners is hung, in accordance with the rituals of the Nguyen Dynasty's imperial court.

The pole-raising ceremony was held first at the Trieu Mieu historical site, which is the place of worship for Mr. Nguyen Kim, the father of Lord Tien Nguyen Hoang.

At Hien Lam Pavilion, the highest structure in the Hue Imperial Citadel, is the The Mieu historical site – a place of worship for the Nguyen dynasty kings, and also home to the national treasure, the Nine Dynastic Urns.

The pole-raising ceremony is usually organized by the Hue Imperial Citadel Relics Conservation Center on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month to preserve the cultural values of the ancient imperial court, as well as to create a cultural highlight and attraction for tourists.
