“In 2023, I was the first patient in Hai Phong to receive a corneal transplant from my grandmother, the doctors at the Central Eye Hospital and Hai Phong Eye Hospital. Up to now, my eyes can see clearly, no longer feel irritated or hurt due to weather changes. Seeing light again has made my life more confident and happier. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to send my sincere thanks to the team of highly qualified, ethical and dedicated doctors who helped me have this precious opportunity. I hope that more and more unfortunate people like me will find their sight again.” Mr. Vu Duy Hai's sharing at the 2025 Corneal Transplant Conference held on the morning of August 23 at Hai Phong Eye Hospital added confidence to families with relatives waiting for corneal transplants.
It is known that on August 23, among the 4 patients who successfully received corneal transplants at Hai Phong Eye Hospital, there was a patient who was only 16 years old. Dr. Nguyen Duc Quan said that performing corneal transplants is not easy. This requires great effort and determination from the hospital's doctors and medical staff; close coordination between the Central Eye Hospital, the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation, the Central Eye Bank, the anesthesia team (Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital) and the absolute trust of the patients and their families.
“The eyes are the “windows to the soul” of each person. Understanding the difficulties of patients with eye diseases, at risk of blindness, especially young patients with a long future ahead, always urges doctors to perform surgery,” Dr. Quan shared.
With the success of 4 corneal transplants in 2025, bringing the total number of corneal transplant surgeries at Hai Phong Eye Hospital to 8 in 3 consecutive years (from 2023 to 2025), continuing to make a prominent mark of Hai Phong's medical sector on the corneal transplant map of Vietnam and the regional medical map.
In addition to corneal transplantation, the hospital is fully mastering the technical categories of a grade 2 hospital and approaching the technical categories of a grade 1 or special hospital, such as: amniotic membrane transplantation, vitrectomy, intraocular injection, lacrimal duct surgery, specialized eye cosmetic surgery, Phaco laser... The hospital is also preparing to perform myopia treatment surgery from 2025 with the expectation of serving people right in Hai Phong, without having to travel to Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City or abroad.

Inheriting the tradition of over 40 years of the city's Ophthalmology sector and 17 years of construction and development, from a subdivision, Hai Phong Eye Hospital expanded, creating an ophthalmology complex with 3 green-clean-beautiful subdivisions. From the initial 50 beds, the hospital now has 120 planned beds and 150 actual beds; the bed capacity often exceeds 125-135%.
Every year, the hospital examines more than 70,000 patients, including thousands of out-of-town patients and hundreds of foreign patients, and performs nearly 13,000 surgeries to treat blindness, hundreds of which are performed completely free of charge for the poor and near-poor. Every year, the hospital also organizes dozens of medical teams to examine patients and give free medicine at health stations in communes, wards, and special zones in and outside the city, and organizes free eye exams for students in kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in the area.
With the view that each case that is examined early and treated promptly will help the patient regain the light of life and change their fate, the staff of Hai Phong Eye Hospital focuses on innovating the way the hospital operates according to the model of "happy hospital", improving the quality of eye health care in the community.
