Two of the world 's strongest futsal teams, Portugal and Iran, were simultaneously eliminated from the 2024 Futsal World Cup, after losses last night (September 26) and early this morning (September 27, Vietnam time).
World champions Portugal lost 1-2 to Kazakhstan in a match that put the defending world champions in a chasing position.

Kazakhstan opened the scoring in this match, thanks to Chingiz Yesenamanov in the 10th minute. Then, early in the second half, Zicky Te equalized 1-1 for Portugal.
However, in the final minute of the match, minute 40 (in futsal, the official playing time of each match is a total of 40 minutes, not counting the time the ball is out of play), Dauren Tursagulov scored the decisive goal, sealing a 2-1 victory for Kazakhstan.
Losing the match, Portugal was eliminated in the round of 16, and at the same time they lost the chance to defend their World Cup title.

Like world champions Portugal, reigning Asian champions Iran suffered an early exit. The West Asian team surprisingly lost 3-4 to Morocco in the round of 16 match last night. Morocco won the right to face Brazil in the quarterfinals.
Before that, another shocking surprise happened, when Venezuela beat former World Cup champion Spain 2-1. Venezuela entered the quarter-finals to meet Ukraine.
Tonight and early tomorrow morning (September 28, Vietnam time), the final two matches of the round of 16 will take place. Thailand will face France and former world champions Argentina will face Croatia. After Portugal and Spain were eliminated, Argentina and Brazil are currently the strongest candidates for the championship of the tournament.
