According to Elon Musk's prediction, people will not need jobs or money, and there will be no more poverty. At the US-Saudi Arabia Investment Forum on November 17, where Musk participated in a discussion with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, he said that money will be "obsolete" thanks to AI.
“There will still be limits to resources like electricity and materials. But I think at some point, money will become meaningless,” Musk said.
This is a reference to the works of science fiction writer Iain Banks, who wrote the Culture series from 1987 to 2012. Musk said the books help “visualize what a positive AI future might look like.”
Musk also mentioned that people can choose to work or not, like playing sports or video games. The billionaire's vision of the future also has similarities to gardening.
“Growing your own vegetables in your backyard is much harder, but people do it because they like it. It will be optional in the future,” Musk explained.
Musk has repeatedly talked about his vision for a future with AI over the past few months. Speaking recently at an investor meeting, this includes eradicating poverty.
“People have been talking about ending poverty and giving everyone great healthcare for a long time. There’s only one way to do that, and that’s with Optimus,” Musk said at the shareholder event.
He told host Joe Rogan in October that when AI and robots like Tesla's Optimus eliminate all jobs and money, the government should give everyone a universal income. But it wouldn't be a base income, it would be high from the start.
In that vision, people will be able to own any product or service they want. However, the Tesla CEO predicts there will be a lot of trauma and disruption on the journey to get there.
Also at the event, Nvidia CEO commented that people's jobs will be different due to the impact of AI. "In the short term, I think there is every evidence that we will be more productive, but at the same time, we will also be busier," he said.
JPMorgan estimates that 15% of jobs will be replaced by AI in the next 20 years, representing a potential $7 trillion boost to GDP. The bank's report also notes that technology could create new jobs that humans can't yet imagine.
The event comes as Musk's xAI and Humain, a company backed by the Saudi government, are jointly building a 500 MW data center using Nvidia chips, in an effort to develop some of the world's largest infrastructure in the region. The US appears to have reached an agreement with the Middle Eastern country to buy semiconductors made by them, according to the NYT .
