Inter had hoped that Cesc Fabregas would be the successor to coach Simone Inzaghi, who had just resigned to join Al Hilal. However, Como sent an official refusal notice to Giuseppe Meazza, emphasizing that the Spaniard still had a contract until 2028. Fabregas' side also did not express their desire to leave, choosing to respect the decision of the Board of Directors.
Immediately after the Fabregas deal fell through, Inter president Marotta and his team immediately turned to plan B, named Cristian Chivu. They contacted the Parma coach at noon on Thursday (June 5), and the two sides met and reached a verbal agreement on the terms in the afternoon. By Friday, the contract was signed.
Accordingly, Chivu will sign a contract until 2027. The Romanian coach will soon start work because on June 11, Inter will depart for the US, starting the journey to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
One of the reasons why Inter appointed Chivu was the former defender's connection to Nezzaruzzi. He played for Inter for seven years, from 2007 until his retirement in 2014. Under Mancini, Chivu won Serie A three years in a row, won two Coppa Italias and two Italian Super Cups. He was also a key player in the great treble of the 2009/10 season with Jose Mourinho.
Moving into coaching, Chivu took charge of Inter's U14, U17 and U18 teams, before being promoted to Primavera Inter coach in 2021 and leading the Nezzaruzzi reserve team to the title. He only left in 2024 when he accepted an offer from Parma. Chivu is known for his tactical flexibility, alternating between 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 formations, so is considered a suitable successor to Inzaghi.
