The FIFA Council has officially approved the organization of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the first edition scheduled to take place in September–October 2026. This decision not only marks a new step in the global football development strategy but also opens up significant opportunities for breakthroughs for the Southeast Asian region.
First introduced at the ASEAN Summit in October 2025 and receiving strong support from countries in the region, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to become a large-scale, professional competition, contributing to raising the professional quality and commercial value of Southeast Asian football – a region with rich potential but yet to fully exploit its resources.
FIFA's direct sponsorship and development of a regional tournament demonstrates a clear shift from a uniform development model to targeted regional investment. Southeast Asia, with its population of over 600 million, passionate football fandom, and rapidly growing commercial market, is considered a suitable destination for groundbreaking initiatives.
Alongside the AFF Cup, SEA Games, and the U23 Southeast Asian Championship, the FIFA ASEAN Cup promises to create a high-quality competitive environment, complementing the region's existing competition system. For member federations, including Vietnam, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is not only a new playing field but also an opportunity to assert their position, increase their influence, and promote professionalization. The tournament will help Vietnamese football pursue long-term goals at the continental and global levels.
Information regarding the organization and format of the FIFA ASEAN Cup will be announced by FIFA in the near future.
