Iran is one of the first teams in Asia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. However, they are facing the risk of being banned from the tournament taking place in the US, Mexico and Canada next summer.

Iran and Israel have been conducting military attacks on each other in recent times. Tensions escalated when on the evening of June 22, the US joined the fight by sending many B-2 bombers to attack three Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

Notably, Iran is currently on the list of countries banned from entering the US under the immigration restrictions issued by US President Donald Trump. This means that members of the Iranian team are likely to be barred from entering the US to attend the World Cup.

Not only that, FIFA is likely to impose a ban on the 2026 World Cup. In the past, Russia was given a similar punishment by FIFA for participating in a special military operation in Ukraine. Previously, Yugoslavia was also banned from FIFA and UEFA tournaments in the 1990s because of fighting in the Balkans.

SportBible believes that President Trump has a certain influence on FIFA President Gianni Infantino. That could force FIFA to impose a ban on Iran even though the football governing body does not want that to happen.

FIFA was heavily criticized for its ban on Russian football. Now it faces similar pressure over Iran.

Up to this point, FIFA and US President Trump have not made any comments regarding the possibility of Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Iran striker Mehdi Taremi has been stuck in his home country and unable to travel to the US to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup with Inter Milan because Iran has completely closed its airspace.
