Flick renews contract with Barcelona

Barcelona and coach Hansi Flick have reached an agreement to extend his contract until 2027.

This information was revealed after successful negotiations between the two sides in recent days.

The decision to delay the official announcement was driven by two key factors. Firstly, both Flick and the Barça board wanted to focus all their energies on the treble that was within reach: La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. With important games coming up in all three competitions, they did not want any distractions to affect the team's performance.

The second – and perhaps more important – factor is the club's financial situation. Barcelona currently do not meet La Liga's financial requirements, making it impossible for them to sign new contracts or renew contracts with anyone.

The problem arose after La Liga refused to accept the revenue from the sale of VIP boxes at the new Camp Nou stadium - a deal that President Laporta completed at the end of last year. Barcelona are now waiting for Turkish construction company Limak to complete the VIP boxes, expected in May, in order for La Liga to approve the improvement of the financial "fair play" situation.

Interestingly, Flick actually prefers year-by-year extensions over long-term commitments. The German shared this view in a recent press conference: "I'm not a coach who wants to sign a three-year contract and think that my future is secure. I like working for the best club in the world and I appreciate what I have. I understand that the situation at the club is not easy. We will go step by step, year by year. If we are still happy, another year."

However, Barcelona want to ensure stability for their project and avoid constant questions about Flick's future, so the extension until 2027 is a satisfactory solution for both parties, with Flick also seeing it as a positive step forward.
