Hansi Flick once wanted to bring Tah to Barcelona. |
The 29-year-old centre-back not only secured a starting spot immediately, but was also voted by the Bayern dressing room as one of the captains, alongside Joshua Kimmich, Manuel Neuer and Harry Kane. This shows the strong influence Tah has both on and off the pitch.
Tah started the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the German Super Cup, ahead of Kim Min-jae - who is at risk of leaving Bayern if a suitable offer comes in. His solidity, experience and leadership qualities have seen him quickly become a key cog in a defence that struggled last season.
In fact, Hansi Flick saw Tah's value early on. When he was still in charge of Barcelona, he repeatedly urged the board to bring the German centre-back to Camp Nou. Barca even had the chance to own him on a free transfer, but in the end they gave up because their defence was too crowded, losing a great deal. Bayern did not miss the opportunity and now they are enjoying the sweet fruit.
Speaking during the pre-season preparations, Tah said: “I don’t like the word ‘leader’. On the pitch, we all have to be leaders and take responsibility together. But it’s true that I always want to take the lead and take on more responsibility, both on and off the pitch.”
With a free transfer, Bayern have secured a world-class centre-back, a team man. And more importantly, they have found a new leader to lead their defence back to the top of Europe.
