Within the framework of the recent Canada-Vietnam AI Summit, FPT and Mila - the world's leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institute signed a 3-year cooperation agreement to build an AI strategy and responsibility framework, ensuring ethics in research, development, and application of this technology.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada, FPT Corporation of Vietnam and the Mila Institute of Canada have agreed to continue their cooperative relationship to develop artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly to serve humanity and social progress.
This strategic agreement was reached at a conference between the two founders of the two organizations, witnessed by representatives of the Quebec provincial government, representatives of Vietnamese agencies, and many scientists and researchers on AI.

Under the agreement, FPT Vietnam and the Mila Institute (Quebec Artificial Intelligence Center in Montreal) will continue to develop core research projects such as healthcare, environment, climate change and AI ethics.
The two sides will maintain coordination to solve complex AI problems and pioneer the formation of an AI ecosystem for a safer and better world.
This is the second time FPT and Mila have signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the field of AI research, training and development.
According to Professor Yoshua Bengio, founder of the Mila AI Research Institute, ethics and social responsibility help AI "integrate" into life, but to promote AI to continue to develop more strongly, there must be legal barriers in its application in real life.
However, before laws can create change, education is the fastest and most sustainable tool for humans to accompany AI. For Professor Yoshua Bengio, in order for the next generations to acquire the most applied scientific knowledge, scientists and educators can create basic knowledge, divided into classes to apply to teaching at different ages.
Professor Yoshua Bengio also affirmed that the most important thing is to use AI responsibly and safely.
Sharing about the cooperation agreement with FPT, Prof. Yoshua Bengio said that the cooperation with FPT is a testament to the international impact that Mila can create. Over the past 3 years, the cooperation has brought many meaningful values to the Mila community, contributing to the realization of many scientific projects.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with FPT, one of our major partners in Asia,” said Yoshua Bengio.
Sharing at the conference, Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT Board of Directors, said that FPT wishes to join forces with top AI intelligence for a safer, better and happier world.
At the same time, Mr. Binh also argued that scientists and technology researchers need to have global agreements on the responsibility of using AI. For him, education can be a solid springboard to train learners in creativity, the ability to debate and criticize issues to always have an objective perspective.

Mr. Truong Gia Binh also emphasized that AI can be a companion, bringing happiness to every person. For example, AI can bring about medical equality by distributing medicine evenly to patients, from cities to rural areas, as Long Chau Pharmacy has done.
Right in each family, AI can be applied to analyze energy consumption data in the house and propose energy saving measures with FPT Smart Home. The great goal of technology in general or artificial intelligence in particular, according to Mr. Binh, is to go hand in hand, bringing joy and happiness to human life.
FPT Corporation is the only Southeast Asian enterprise to have a cooperative relationship with Mila Institute since June 2020.
The two sides have cooperated very effectively in many research projects such as language modeling, speech coding, natural language processing and large language models in the style of ChatGPT...
Professor Yoshua Bengio - founder and Scientific Director of Mila Institute - affirmed that over the past three years, the Mila community has also benefited greatly from the relationship between Mila Institute and FPT Vietnam Corporation, which has led to the realization of many projects.
He expressed his great pleasure to continue cooperating with FPT - one of Mila Institute's major partners in Asia. This is a typical example of Mila Institute's international influence.
With strategic advice from Mila Institute, FPT is nurturing the idea of establishing a world-class AI research center in Quy Nhon city (Binh Dinh province) of Vietnam, worth about more than 85 million USD.
The complex is expected to be the largest research, development and learning facility ever built and could accommodate about 20,000 technology workers.
Professor Bengio said there is currently no regulation around AI. Many countries are starting to think about how to regulate it because there are aspects that need special attention when using AI on social media.
He stressed that the international community needs to ensure that AI is not used to impersonate humans. Companies must also ensure that documents generated by their AI systems, even for testing purposes, are safe for the public.
We need to start putting in place regulations to protect the public, to ensure that humanity benefits from advancing technology.
AI technology is a hot topic among many parties, from researchers to managers, because the level of AI has reached a worrying threshold, especially in terms of impersonation.
AI can even surpass human intelligence in some cases. This is a very dangerous issue and also a concern in the areas of cooperation between FPT Vietnam and Mila Institute.
The two sides are planning to develop projects to promote responsible AI to protect people from the negative impacts this technology causes.
