Disagreements among members on current global political issues and on the forum's overall agenda for the future will undoubtedly make it very difficult for Brazil, as the current rotating president of the G20, to succeed in this responsibility.
The G20 foreign ministers met in Brazil on February 22.
Outwardly, the main disagreements among member groups revolve around the conflict in Ukraine, Russia's position and role within the G20, and the G20's and individual member countries' relations with Russia. In addition, the Hamas-Israel conflict is also a divisive issue. This conflict became particularly sensitive in terms of world politics and international relations after South Africa brought Israel before the International Court of Justice. Furthermore, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, currently the G20 chair, personally stated that Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip are similar to the Nazi genocide of Jews in Europe at the beginning of the last century.
Over the past two years, with Indonesia and India holding the rotating presidency of the G20, the group of Western and pro-Western G20 members has sought to turn the entire G20 into an anti-Russia forum. Now, this group is trying to steer Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva away from focusing the G20 on the conflict in the Gaza Strip and away from the conflict in Ukraine. Therefore, the G20 is struggling to achieve internal consensus to strengthen and enhance its global political role. Nevertheless, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva continues to emphasize the role and influence of the "Southern Hemisphere" members within the G20.
