3 members of the demon hunting team.
This time, he participated in producing, co-writing and starring in the horror film “Holy Night: Demon Hunters”. How is this work different from the actor’s previous films?
In Can Tho , the film is showing at Lotte Cinema and CGV theaters.
The film revolves around the activities of the “Holy Night” group consisting of 3 members: Bau (Ma Dong-seok) - a man who uses his fists to fight demons, Sharon (Seohyun) - a shaman who can sense and expel evil spirits, Kim Gun (Lee David) - a technology assistant who supports missions. This group operates as a private organization specializing in accepting “exorcism cases” for hire.
At this time, a criminal organization that worships demons has appeared in Seoul. They harm people, cause chaos, and cause many innocent people to disappear. Bau's demon hunting team is overwhelmed with work. One day, psychiatrist Jung-won (Kyung Soo-jin) comes to them for help when his sister Eun-seo (Jung Ji-so) shows signs of being possessed by a demon. While performing an exorcism to save the girl, they find the lair of the evil cult, led by an old acquaintance of Bau's. In this battle, the team members not only fight demons but also have to overcome their own psychological shadow...
Taking on the lead role, Ma Dong-seok still maintains his familiar image: cold and solving everything with his fists. His strong and decisive action and fighting scenes are enough to attract audiences to the theater, engaging enough to keep the film's rhythm, but not different enough to impress viewers or create a breakthrough.
The new point is that instead of investigating and solving crimes or fighting with humans, in this film, Ma Dong-seok fights with demons and investigates the evil forces behind the manipulation. Accompanying him is the female shaman Sharon with the ability to sense and exorcise demons. The battle is therefore more attractive when mixed with horror and mystery. The exorcism ritual has sequential steps, each step is a thrilling battle of wits and strength. Occasionally, the film has a few humorous details, creating laughter, helping viewers relieve tension.
However, the highlight of the acting is not the main actors but Jung Ji-so in the role of Eun-seo, who conquers the audience with many psychological nuances and expressions. Every look, breathing, voice, gesture... of the character is expressed vividly by her, making the audience feel scared or pity. Her acting makes the audience believe that there is a terrifying evil force tormenting the girl's body and possessing her soul.
Bau's past tragedy and Sharon's psychological struggles have not been clarified and deeply exploited; the script is simple, predictable, and the motifs are familiar... these are the film's limitations. In Korea, the film has not achieved the expected revenue, but for the general audience, this is a film that is just entertaining enough.
