Gattuso has been chosen to replace Maurizio Sarri, who is very close to joining Atalanta. The Bergamo club wants to appoint Sarri after parting ways with coach Raffaele Palladino at the end of the season.

According to Italian media, president Claudio Lotito has long valued Gattuso's strong personality and fighting spirit. When Lazio were forced to find a new coach, the former AC Milan midfielder quickly became the top choice.

The 48-year-old coach has not taken on a new job since leaving the Italian national team after their failure in the 2026 World Cup play-offs. Prior to that, Gattuso managed several major clubs such as AC Milan, Napoli, and Olympique de Marseille.
