- In recent years, realizing the economic efficiency of citrus development, many households in Tan Thanh commune, Huu Lung district have not only focused on expanding the planting and care area but also boldly implemented the technique of grafting Thai orange branches (Thai oranges) onto grapefruit roots. Thereby, contributing to increasing the value and economic efficiency of fruit tree development in the area.
As one of the pioneering households implementing the technique of grafting Thai orange branches on grapefruit roots in Tan Thanh commune, Mr. Ta Quang Lam, Goc Gao village said: In 2021, during a visit to a relative's house in Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province, I saw people here grafting Thai oranges on Dien grapefruit and green-skin grapefruit roots, with high economic efficiency. Since the end of 2021, I have hired someone to perform this technique on more than 100 grapefruit trees of my family.
Mr. Lam added: During the grafting process, I also learned from experience and practiced. With the knowledge I learned, I gradually succeeded in doing it myself. Up to now, my family has more than 500 Thai orange trees grafted on Dien grapefruit and green-skin grapefruit roots. This is the second year that the Thai orange garden has produced fruit. Currently in the main season, the family is harvesting and the garden is purchased by traders at the price of 30,000 VND/kg; the family retails at markets at prices from 35,000 to 40,000 VND/kg. This year, the family is expected to harvest over 8 tons of Thai oranges, bringing in an income of more than 240 million VND.
Like Mr. Lam's family, realizing that grafting Thai orange branches onto grapefruit roots is highly effective economically, Mr. Vy Van Luong's family in Ao Kham village also applied this technique on their Dien grapefruit roots. Mr. Luong said: My family currently has over 600 Thai orange trees grafted onto Dien grapefruit roots. This year is the first year my family has harvested fruit. Since the 11th lunar month, my family has started pruning fruit for sale. This year's Thai orange crop, my family expects to harvest more than 6 tons of fruit. In the coming time, I will continue to apply grafting Thai orange branches onto the remaining grapefruit roots of my family.
It is known that Tan Thanh is a commune with many favorable conditions for growing fruit trees, especially citrus trees such as Dien grapefruit, green-skin grapefruit... However, in the past 2 to 3 years, the low price of grapefruit (especially Dien grapefruit) has caused people to seek to switch to trees with higher economic efficiency. Since 2021, in the commune, there have been households successfully implementing the technique of grafting Thai orange branches on grapefruit roots. The first Thai orange branches were purchased by people from gardens in Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province, then divided into small pieces and grafted onto grapefruit roots available in their gardens. If the technique is performed correctly, after 1 year of care, farmers will harvest the first batches of fruit. The whole commune currently has about 12 households implementing the technique of grafting Thai orange branches on grapefruit roots.
Mr. Truong Xuan Huu, Vice Chairman of Tan Thanh Commune People's Committee, said: Up to now, the whole commune has about 6 hectares of Thai oranges grafted on grapefruit roots. This year, the output of Thai oranges has reached 25 to 30 tons. Thai oranges are sweet and fragrant, have thin skin, and usually ripen later than some other types of oranges, so they mainly serve the Lunar New Year market. Therefore, oranges are bought by retailers at high prices, contributing to increasing value and economic efficiency. From developing Thai oranges, households have had an income of 40 to over 200 million VND/year.
It can be seen that the successful implementation of the technique of grafting Thai orange branches onto old grapefruit roots not only helps people take advantage of grapefruit roots that have been invested in and cared for for many years, but also shortens the time to care for fruit trees. Thereby contributing to increasing the value and income of local people.
