In 2025, the La Nina phenomenon is expected to replace El Nino, bringing colder and drier weather to Brazil’s coffee-growing regions. This increases the risk of frost, which can destroy coffee trees and severely impact expected yields.

Last week, the world coffee price, the price of robusta coffee futures for delivery in May 2025 decreased by 130 USD/ton. The price of arabica coffee futures for delivery in May 2025 increased by 25.35 cents/lb.

Domestic coffee prices increased by VND800/kg last week, currently trading in the range of VND128,500 - 129,500/kg.

Arabica coffee prices hit a record high this week after Brazil forecast its coffee production in 2025-26 would fall to a three-year low. Arabica coffee prices have risen for 12 consecutive sessions, marking the longest winning streak since 1980. A stronger Brazilian real has also boosted coffee prices, with a stronger Brazilian currency reducing export sales for Brazilian coffee producers.

Arabica coffee prices rose to a new high while robusta prices remained near record highs on supply concerns after Brazil forecast its coffee output in the 2025-2026 crop year to fall to a three-year low.

The risk of a coffee shortage in Brazil, the world’s largest producer of arabica, continues to worry traders after record exports at the start of the season left the country with less available supplies. Robusta prices, meanwhile, were supported by a continued decline in output. Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development estimates that drought will reduce coffee output in the 2023-2024 crop year by 20% to 1.472 million tonnes, the lowest in four years. Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of robusta.

The coffee market started heating up early last week when Brazil’s Agricultural Supply and Supply Control Agency (Conab) forecast that coffee production in the 2025-2026 crop year would fall 4.4% from the previous crop year, to a three-year low of 51.81 million bags (each bag is equivalent to 60kg). Conab also cut its estimated coffee production in last year’s crop year by 1.1%, to 54.2 million bags.

The rise in the Brazilian real has also boosted coffee prices. The stronger real reduces export sales for Brazilian coffee producers. Brazil is facing its driest weather since 1981, according to the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (Cemaden).

Global coffee inventories could fall to their second-lowest level in 65 years as supply fails to keep up with demand, Bloomberg warned. The global coffee supply chain has been in a deficit for four straight years, with demand exceeding supply by 15-20 million bags a year, leading to depleted inventories, analysts said.
