Goat meat prices increase, breeders are excited

Profits from fattening goats

Previously, Mr. Pham Xuan Phuong, a farmer member of Village 6 (Binh Trung Commune), in addition to farming, also grew corn and raised chickens... but the efficiency was not high, causing his family's life to be in short supply. By 2022, encouraged by the locality to change the livestock structure, Mr. Phuong consulted a lot of information about livestock models, then decided to invest in breeding goats and raising fattened goats for meat sale.

Every year, Mr. Phuong raises 3 batches of meat goats. For each batch, he imports about 200 male goats weighing 10-15 kg each. After more than 3 months of fattening, the goats reach a weight of about 35 kg each and are then sold to traders in the provinces. After deducting expenses, his family earns a profit of more than 500 million VND.

In Xuan Son commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Tu is also one of the famous goat farmers. He always maintains more than 100 meat goats/batch, earning about 300 million VND/year. Mr. Tu said that raising goats is not expensive but brings high economic efficiency thanks to taking advantage of food sources from corn, beans and grass. In particular, the Bach Thao hybrid goat has the ability to gain weight quickly, adults can weigh up to 60kg.

According to Mr. Tu, by keeping goats in barns, farmers can proactively manage and take better care of their goats. However, to raise goats effectively, farmers must pay attention to keeping the barns dry and airy; regularly cleaning the barns, disinfecting, and vaccinating the goats against diseases.

Sustainable goat farming link

According to Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Thuy, Vice Chairman of Xuan Son Commune People's Committee, goat breeding and fattening have proven to be effective in increasing income and improving the lives of farmers. The commune's goat herd has continuously increased over the years. Many households have boldly expanded their farming scale to 200-300 goats/year. Aiming to promote existing potentials and advantages, in the coming time, the locality will continue to coordinate with Farmers' Associations at all levels and the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies to create conditions for people to access preferential loans to develop production; encourage and guide farmers to replicate goat fattening models, helping people increase their income, escape poverty sustainably and become rich.

As a member of the Goat Breeding Association of Xuan Son Commune, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang said that her family had previously invested a lot of effort and money in pig and cow farming but had continuously encountered difficulties due to prices. From 2022 until now, Ms. Hang's family has decided to completely switch to commercial goat farming.

“Goats are omnivorous animals, so they can take advantage of the abundant food sources in the garden. Goats rarely get sick, so it is much easier than raising pigs or chickens. With the current selling price of nearly 160,000 VND/kg, each goat will bring in a profit of more than 2 million VND. Selling about 100 commercial goats a year, she earns about 200 million VND/year,” Ms. Hang added.

Chau Duc district currently has a total herd of about 100 thousand goats. To support people in sustainable goat farming, the District Farmers' Association has developed a project to develop a commercial goat herd, associated with building the "Chau Duc Goat" brand. From there, improve the quality of breeding goats, organize production towards concentrated goods and improve the quality of meat goats; form a chain of links in production, consumption and processing.
