For customers using 101-200 kWh (the largest customer group), the electricity bill will increase by about 20,150 VND/household/month. For customers using 400 kWh or more, the electricity bill will increase by about 65,050 VND/household/month.
The average retail electricity price announced by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) on the afternoon of May 9 will increase by 4.8% from tomorrow (May 10), to more than 2,200 VND/kWh (excluding VAT).
Specifically, with the 6-step progressive electricity price, the adjustment will be applied from May 10 for the retail electricity price of step 1 (from 0-50 kWh) increasing from 1,893 VND/kWh to 1,984 VND/kWh. The electricity price of step 2 (from 51-100 kWh) will increase from 1,956.0 VND/kWh to 2,050 VND/kWh. The electricity price of step 3 (from 101-200 kWh) will increase from 2,271 VND/kWh to 2,380 VND/kWh.
The price of electricity at level 4 (from 201-300 kWh) will increase from VND2,271/kWh to VND2,380/kWh. The price of electricity at level 5 (from 301-400 kWh) will increase from VND3,197/kWh to VND3,350/kWh. The retail price of electricity at level 6 (from 401 kWh and above) will increase from VND3,302/kWh to VND3,460/kWh.
Representative of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) - Mr. Vo Quang Lam, Deputy General Director of EVN said that the electricity price increase is based on Decision No. 1279 QD-BCT dated May 9, 2025 of the Ministry of Industry and Trade promulgating retail electricity prices for groups of electricity customers and electricity prices for electricity retailers; Decision 599 QD-EVN of Vietnam Electricity Group.
According to EVN's assessment, after adjusting the retail electricity price, households using less than 50 kWh of electricity (accounting for 10.55% of households) will see an increase of about VND4,550/household/month in their electricity bills. For customers using 51-100 kWh (accounting for 13.98% of households), the increase in electricity bills will be about VND9,250/household/month. For customers using 101-200 kWh (accounting for 32.79% of households and also the largest customer group), the increase in electricity bills will be about VND20,150/household/month.
“For the group of customers using electricity from 201-300 kWh (accounting for 19.33% of electricity customers), the increase in electricity bill is about 33,950 VND/household/month. Customers using electricity from 301-400 kWh (accounting for about 9.89% of electricity customers), the increase in electricity bill is about 49,250 VND/household/month. For customers using electricity from 400 kWh or more (accounting for about 13.45% of electricity customers), the increase in electricity bill is about 65,050 VND/household/month. Thus, with the new price above, the highest additional electricity bill people pay is 60,050 VND/household/month,” said an EVN leader.
EVN also explained that this electricity price increase has been considered based on input costs, fluctuating costs and payments from people and businesses, to ensure social security goals. Particularly, electricity support for the poor and social policy households will be implemented according to Decision 28 of 2014.
Accordingly, poor households are supported with monthly electricity bills equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 30kWh/household/month. For social policy households with electricity usage of no more than 50kWh/month, the support level is also equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 30kWh/household/month.
In addition, the support level for poor households and policy households is also applied according to Decision 2699 of 2024 of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, with the support level of VND 56,790/household/month (excluding VAT). After applying the new electricity price, each poor household will receive electricity support of about VND 59,520/household/month (excluding VAT).
“Basically, this electricity price adjustment will ensure that poor households and policy families are not affected significantly. According to statistics, in 2024, the whole country will have 599,608 poor households and social policy households receiving electricity support according to the Government 's policy. This policy aims to reduce the burden of electricity costs for poor households and social policy households, helping to ensure social security and implement the Government 's policy on supporting disadvantaged groups," EVN leaders affirmed.
Citing assessment data from the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance), EVN leaders also said that this electricity price adjustment is expected to increase the consumer price index (CPI) in 2025 by about 0.09%.
