Pig farmers make profits but are still cautious about restocking

The price of live pigs in the Mekong Delta has increased sharply, helping many households make good profits. However, concerns about disease and high costs have prevented many people from boldly restocking their herds, according to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper.

In recent months, pig prices in the Mekong Delta have recovered strongly, bringing high profits to many pig farmers. After a long period of losses due to low pig prices and high farming costs, pig farmers in the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta are temporarily breathing easier.

Since the beginning of 2025, the price of live pigs has remained consistently high. Especially in March and April, the price reached 82,000 VND/kg, a record increase in the past few years.

According to Mr. Phan Huu Bao, the reason for the sharp increase in pork prices is due to a significant decrease in supply as many households withdrew from pig farming after a long period of losses. In addition, domestic demand for pork increased, while the amount of imported meat decreased, contributing to the increase in domestic prices.

Although the price of live pigs is high, many pig farmers in the Mekong Delta are still cautious and have not yet boldly restored or expanded their herds. Many farms continue to be empty or maintain their herds at a minimum.

The main reason is due to concerns about disease risks, especially African swine fever and some infectious diseases that have not been completely controlled. Along with that, high input costs also make farmers hesitant. Currently, to raise a pig weighing about 100kg, farmers have to invest from 6.2 to 6.5 million VND, most of which is for breeding and feed costs.
