Gia Lai 'activates' nighttime economic development.

DNVN - Gia Lai is gradually "awakening" its nightlife as an important component of its service economy, with the goal of extending the length of stay, increasing tourist spending, creating more jobs, and forming vibrant, distinctive destinations.

According to the recently issued plan for the development of the night-time economy , Gia Lai province has defined the night-time economy as not merely entertainment activities after 6 PM, but as a comprehensive service ecosystem closely linked to tourism, commerce, culture, sports, and urban experiences. This is considered a new direction to effectively exploit existing potential and create room for growth in the service sector during the 2026-2030 period.

Ở lĩnh vực mua sắm và ẩm thực, tỉnh định hướng phát triển các tuyến phố đi bộ, chợ đêm, khu ẩm thực mang bản sắc vùng miền, gắn với sản phẩm OCOP và đặc sản địa phương.

Gia Lai will develop more pedestrian streets, night markets, and food courts that reflect regional characteristics, linked to OCOP products and local specialties.

The focus of the plan is to diversify nighttime products and services, ranging from cultural and artistic performances, shopping, dining, sightseeing, to sports and healthcare.

Traditional performances such as gong music, Bài Chòi (a traditional folk game), Tuồng (classical Vietnamese opera), and traditional martial arts are regularly or periodically organized at night, combined with modern shows, light displays, street music, festivals, and cultural events. This creates distinctive products that bear the unique mark of Gia Lai, capable of captivating tourists long after sunset.

In the shopping and culinary sector, the province is orienting the development of pedestrian streets, night markets, and food courts that reflect regional characteristics, linked to OCOP products and local specialties.

Shopping malls, supermarkets, and convenience stores are encouraged to extend their operating hours, even aiming for a 24/7 service model in suitable areas. Simultaneously, high standards of environmental hygiene, food safety, and plastic waste reduction are required to ensure sustainable development.

Gia Lai's night-time economy has also expanded to include sports, health care, and nighttime nature experiences. Activities such as yoga, jogging, dancing, amateur sports competitions, and night tours of historical sites, scenic spots, and museums are considered important components in creating a dynamic urban lifestyle that is still harmonious with the living space of the local community.

The plan also calls for a shift in management thinking, moving beyond the "if you can't manage it, ban it" approach, so that the night-time economy truly becomes a driving force for development rather than a management burden.

Trọng tâm của kế hoạch là đa dạng hóa sản phẩm và dịch vụ về đêm, từ biểu diễn văn hóa – nghệ thuật

Traditional performance art forms such as gong music, Bài Chòi (a traditional Vietnamese folk game), Tuồng (classical Vietnamese opera), and traditional martial arts are scheduled to be held regularly or periodically at night.

The People's Committee of Gia Lai province has assigned localities to proactively select models suitable to their actual conditions, ranging from areas with existing nighttime activities to newly proposed spaces. Each locality is required to develop a specific plan, select a pilot model, and report to the province for consideration of financial support. This will be coupled with coordinated efforts from various departments and agencies in infrastructure planning, tourism promotion, trade management, environmental protection, and the statistical analysis of the contribution of the nighttime economy to GRDP growth.

In 2025, Gia Lai province is expected to welcome 12.4 million visitors, a 17.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Of these: international visitors will reach 125,000, a 9.5% increase; domestic visitors will reach 12.2 million, a 17.6% increase; and tourism revenue will reach 29,000 billion VND.
